Door Locks
So I just got a 1966 GMC and am curious why the driver door has a lock on the exterior handle button but the passenger door does not...is there a way to lock the passenger door from the inside or do I have to install a button lock just like the drivers side????
I attached a pic of my new "baby"...got a good deal on her, $2,000!!! Thanks, B |

Re: Door Locks
1. Roll the PS window down just in case you run into a problem. Saves time so you don't have to walk all the way around the truck again.
2. Stand outside the closed PS door and reach through the PS window. Gently push the door handle into the "down" position. That locks the door. 3. DS locks the same way. Hope this helps. Nice truck too. I just bought a 66 Chevy like it yesterday and will drag it home Thursday. Very excited. Jay

Re: Door Locks
Alot of the trucks were that way. I have seen trucks factory ordered in big cities that only had exterior locks on the passenger side as it was safer to exit via the sidewalk than into traffic. Your locks will operate from the inside, although you can purchase the lock mech and convert both doors to locks.

Re: Door Locks
Nice truck, love them GMCs!
Just a heads up, my passenger side door will unintentionally lock from time-to-time when closed too hard. I suggest giving both a doors a few sturdy closings (as Lugnutz65 suggests, with the window open) to make sure you don't have the same issue.

Re: Door Locks
Just a note of clarification on how the 60-66 truck door latches function, which are not the same as those in conventional passenger cars:
1. The inside door handle moved to the “locked” position actually locks the latch in the door. 2. Locking an outside handle knob with a key only prevents the button from being depressed. This effectively prevents unauthorized entry, but the latch in the door remains unlocked (the outside button has no connection to the latch). Whether the outside door button is in the locked or unlocked position, the door can still be opened by operating the inside handle. 3. If the inside handle has been placed in the locked position however, unlocking the door button on that door will not allow entry into the cab. That door can only be opened from the inside by moving the handle out of the locked position. It helps to know how these work in case you have problems with adjustments in the latch or linkage. Also, nice truck and WELCOME TO THE FORUM!! For my truck I just bought a matching set of locks from ClassicParts, although 20 years ago they were less expensive: http://www.classicparts.com/1960-66-...tinfo/18-150M/

Re: Door Locks
I have noticed this with many cars/trucks. as said before the idea was for drivers and passengers to exit the vehicle on the curb side, for safety.
Many 1920's and 1930's cars had the PS door lockable with a key and not the DS.

Re: Door Locks
The passenger side lock was part of the "Custom" option group.

Re: Door Locks
I have a 63 GMC 1500. Are the door locks the same on these trucks?

Re: Door Locks
Functioning is the same. The strikers/latches changed (I believe in 1964) to a different design.

Re: Door Locks
I found out the hard way on this one time. I accidentally pushed down the drivers handle and closed the door. The pass side was already down...whoops. I had a hole in the floor below the handle, so i got a broomstick handle and put it up through the hole and unlocked it. Cant do that now cuz i fixed the holes, lol.
