Unhappy Spare tire mount

Does anybody else have any grief with the spare tire mount? 2007 Silverado. Secondary catch does not want to release. Is this a bad design or is it just me? Any tips?

Re: Spare tire mount

It's a pain in the ass, but you need to use the jack to get it out. There is a set by step in the owners manual. There is a little hook inside that prevents the tire from coming down, they did this because some Ford's in the past had the space falling when driving, so being pro-active GM changed their mounting system.

Re: Spare tire mount

Yes. My buddy had to do the owners manual method to get his down. It took him quite a while and he was hating life. My situation was a bit different. For reference for others, here's what happened. My spare lowered okay but I didn't want to drive around to the tire shop with that cable gizmo dangling so I reeled it up. Too far up I guess as It wouldn't come down and didn't have the weight of the spare for the owners manual method. I crawled under the truck and pulled down the rubber boot that keeps crap outta the reel. On the back is two holes. I stuck a screwdriver into one and was able to release that hook of the secondary catch. Back to normal - as crappy as that is.
