What year is this GMC?

I found a rolling chassis that has engine and transmission included...the engine casting on it is: 6107326 GMC 6.

I understand that it's between a 39-52 GMC but how do i determine what year it actually is? Is there any other numbers on the motor that will tell me?

Thanks a lot...in advance!

Re: What year is this GMC?

The date code translates to L291 is December 29 19x1 casting date. So it could be 41 or 51. The guys over at oldgmctrucks.com can help you narrow it down.

Re: What year is this GMC?

You have a photo of the frame it's self. There are distinctive differences between the early 47 and earlier trucks and the AD trucks.

Re: What year is this GMC?

It is also possible that engine is not the original. It doesn't hurt to know what year the engine is but It isn’t a good way to find what year the frame is!

Re: What year is this GMC?

I bought the chassis today...did some measuring and it appears that I made a great purchase! Looks like my project will get started sooner than I thought! Pretty stoked about it!

Re: What year is this GMC?

You might try wire brushing the top of the frame rail near the steering box to see if you can find the serial number there. That would tell you exactly what you have.

Re: What year is this GMC?

It looks like it has tube shocks and they were first used in 1950. 1949 and earlier had what they called knee action shocks and they operate and look very different. So with the casting date on the motor I would say 1951.

I tried to wire brush in that exact spot and nothing turned up...is there anywhere else on the frame that has a serial number?

Re: What year is this GMC?

If you would post a picture of the last crossmember. The one behind the rear wheels, they changed them between 50 and 53.

I have read here on the forum that the number could be farther back under the cab floor. Mine was not stamped deep, and barely readable, so you might have to look really close.

I guess I'll just have to go off all my measurements that tell me that my "body" will work with the chassis, since the chassis doesn't have a cab floor...or is the number on the frame where the cab floor would attach?

I meant on the frame under where the cab floor would normally be, LOL.
