guage wiring question?

can anyone tell me if i change my cluster guages for a model with built in tach complete w/ printed circuit is it a bolt in? or in other words were all the trucks hard wired the same but used the circuit board to get the signals to where they need to go. thanks for any advice.

nope some wires need to move
gas gauge wires move,tach wires up alone

Depends on year, my 76 was plug-n-play with no changes needed

It depends on whether or not your truck was originally wired for warning lights or gauges as well as the year of the truck and year of the cluster.

If you truck was originally wired for a warning light cluster, you will have to re-arrange some wires to install any factory gauge cluster (either with or without tach).

If your truck was originally wired for gauges but without a tach, a tach cluster can be a direct plug-in swap. The key to making it a plug-in swap is getting a compatible year range tach cluster. Compatible year ranges are:

1973 - 1975 = cluster has an ammeter and mechanical oil gauge
1976 - 1977 = cluster has a voltmeter and mechanical oil gauge
1978 - up = cluster has a voltmeter and electric oil gauge

Note there is a minor difference between the 76 and 77 clusters that has to do with the warning/indicator lights in the little "windows" at the bottoms of the speedometer and tach faceplates.

thanks guys, its a guage cluster not and idiot light one. 78 stepside, i knew tach wired in seperatly, but wasn't sure about others. if i use 78 and up, what years would be simple plug and play? and would blazers or surburbans of the same years work also? thanks again. also on the same track, someone removed the original ac. i replace the evap box and welded in a patch where they butched firewall to make a standard heater work. but need to know if any inside heater/defrost/ac box and controls from about 76 to 80 will work if i replace it all. thanks for any help. first time i've played with a truck, more used to old cars and always try getting ones that are complete. this one not so much.

For A/C I would go vintage air since it includes everything you will need inside and under hood

the cluster i found has a plastic front piece better the the metal one
not sure if they all come prewired to move the gas over (jumper 7 to 18)
and watch the font
