New fuel issue

I went to town and picked up my new compressor the other day. The truck drove fine. It's about a 20 minute drive to Lowes. I loaded up the compressor and when I pulled out of the lot the truck died. I fired it up and it went about 20 feet and died. I fired it up again and had to pump the gas to keep it running for another 20 feet then it died again and I had to coast into the lot. When I tried to start it again it would try to start when I would pump the gas. I took the fuel line off the carb and no gas leaked out. I took the line off the filter and nothing came out. After a couple of minutes gas started leaking out of the filter. I put it back together and it fired right up and I drove it home without any issues. Fuel pump going out? Clogged filter? Vapor lock? I figure it has to be one or more of the 3. Any help would be a help. Help.

Re: New fuel issue

Fuel pumps and filters don't cost that much. If you don't know how old they are, just replace them for some piece of mind.

Not a vented cap and I did pull it off when I was working on the truck in the parking lot. It didn't make a sucking sound when I took it off but that might not mean anything. Maybe I'll leave it a little loose and see what happens. I did just fill it the day before and really cranked the cap down and only drove it home about a mile after that. I will definitely put a new filter on tomorrow cuz I haven't changed it since I got the truck anyway. I'll probably get a new pump and keep it around in case this happens again and I can change it on the side of the road.

Re: New fuel issue

I would dissect old filter and inspect element for trash.
My favorite setup is a large filter upstream of pump.
My diaphragm pumps don't last as long as they did in the day.
Not sure if modern gas is harder on diaphragm, new diaphragms are lower quality, or luck.

Had a similar issue couple years ago.
Restarted and ran fine for a while then I was forced to replace pump.

These tanks require a vented cap, there is no other vent other than the cap, you are drawing a vaccum in the tank which will stop gas flow..you can get the origimal style cap thru LMC.

Re: New fuel issue

I replaced the cap last year and this is the first time this has happened. I'll try it as loose as I have been and see if that helps.
