Transmision questions
I just picked up an '85 C10 long box today and it has a manual 3 speed + granny low. Sinse there are actually 4 speeds is it a 4 speed tranny or is it just a 3. I've also never driven a manual with granny low, just my 5 speed, and was wondering if I have to start out in L or if i start in 1st like on a normal tranny. I've heard that L or granny low is for pulling and hauling things, is this correct? Any and all info is greatly appreciated. TIA, DK

Most people will call it a 4-speed. Technically it's a 3-speed. Personally, I'd call it a 4-speed.
Start in 1st. Low is for heavy loads or driving really really slow.

dont even bother with the granny gear it will be totally not needed for the most part. the truck will only do a whopping 4 or 5 mph in that gear. but if you need to pull a house down thats the gear you use. and i dont know whats proper but i would call it a granny gear 4 speed

I agree with these guys....use 1-2-3 gears. L has a ratio of like 6:1 depending on the tranny.....1st on your regular truck tranny is usually 3:1-2.5:1.
BTW, i always called them "granny low four speeds". I suppose the "correct" term would be compound low.....
