i just wanted to post an update. i found a label in the glovebox and it says the truck came from the factory with a 2.73 rear end. that explains why it speeds up so slow. and i have decided to keep the 305 and th350 trans and just get them rebuilt. it is my daily driver so im probably not gonna rebuild the motor my self because it would take entirely too long and i dont have another vehicle to drive.

If your spending money to rebuild the engine anyway why not get the 327 as long as it is very cheap and put a 400 crank in it?
This swap is best done with the large journal 327's and it is cheaper than machining all your old parts. Torque is what moves a truck so build a torque motor. |

If its a large journal 327 you can put this crank in it and gain 50 cubic inches.Use the rods out of the 327 if its large journal and get these pistons.http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SPEED-PR...3ec2d3&vxp=mtr You can get the pistons cheaper but then you need a 6 inch rod.http://www.ebay.com/itm/SBC-383-SMAL...a5c300&vxp=mtr These pistons are for a 0.040 over bore and the first ones are for a 0.060 overbore.You want to bore the motor as little as is possible. |

i haven't even gone to look at the motor yet because the guy is supposed to be selling it but he said the guy he's selling it to probably wont go through with it and if he doesn't he'll just give it to me.

i unscrewed the cable today and the sound did stop. that makes me feel much better now knowing that my transmission isnt eating its self. lol. i guess i just need a new cable.

You can lube the cable and the noise will stop. Or you can replace it.

im gonna be getting a 327 for my truck soon but its gonna need a rebuild before it goes in. i wanted to ask if the stock rear end could handle the 327 and what transmission to get.
In his original post above he said the motor(327) needs rebuilding. |

sorry if im confusing people. lol. i just cant make up my mind. i think i am gonna get the 327 but its not gonna be free anymore. it costs a case of beer. haha. he said if i got him a case of beer i could take the motor.

The 305 is a 350 crank with a small piston bore.The 327 is a 350 piston bore with a short crank.
I have never built a 305 up for performance use but in a truck it might not be a bad choice due to the longer stroke. If your going to do it all with a machine shop helping you out I'd stay with the 327 or buy a used 350 for $75 at a wrecker. I have built a few 302 chevies which are a 350 size piston and 283 stroke crank and you can use cheapo heads and really make them buzz but they don't have a lot of torque.In a truck its hard to beat alot of cubic inches. |

You can measure a journal and see if it is 2.000 or 2.100
If you don' have a caliper take the flexplate or flywheel off and ID it by looking at the flanges shape. The third ay would be to run the block numbers on google. Next would be to take it to a machine shop and just ask the machinist.Most of the better ones can tell you in 30 seconds what you have. |

okay. ill do that when i get it. im hoping to get it within the week and get started on the rebuild. ive never rebuilt a motor so i will learn as im going. lol. ill probably be asking a lot of questions on here but i know theres some nice people on here that are more then happy to help me.

I am putting together a 496 for a 74 stepside and there isn't much to it.The machine shop does all of the hard stuff and you basically just put it all back together.

The stock rear will be fine. My other ride is a 79 Malibu with a 454 4-speed and stock 7.5 10 bolt with 3.42s and a posi. These are the second most weak rears out there.
I've only had one 327, and it ran good. But I don't know how it would be in a truck with those gears. But for next to nothing and some planning they can make some power.
