Grabby Front Disc Brakes

A couple of months ago, I replaced the front pads on my 72 C10.

After compressing the pistons and installing pads and "self bleed" bleeder screws, I bled the brakes.

With the crappy weather, I haven't driven it much.

When I apply the brakes, the fronts lock up occasionally and the pedal seems pretty stiff.

Is it time for new calipers? I'm guessing they're pretty old, if not original.

I also thought about replacing the Master Cylinder and booster when I clean up the engine compartment.

Thoughts?

How far did you compress the piston? It's never a good idea to compress them farther than you need to.

Re: Grabby Front Disc Brakes

Whenever I do brakes, I compress it all the way back with a c clamp. Otherwise the caliper won't fit with the new pads.

Same way I've done it for 20 years.

Well, the reason you shouldn't press it all the way back is because all the rust and gunk on the piston could cause it to get stuck in the caliper...sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. I'd wait and get a few more opinions before replacing anything though.

Yeah, there's probably 30+ years of crap in there.

I've thought about replacing the whole system eventually.

All in good time. I just want it to be safe in the meantime!
