I just sold a set of strikers and the shims on ebay that i took off a 63 both doors had them, and a 63 panel I helped a buddy tear down had them on both doors also...I dont think they are really there to protect the paint but more for fritcion and adjustment of the striker and keep the striker from moving around.see all those little lines cut into both sides of the shims those are for gripping on to the pillar and on to the striker without those the striker would be able to slide around on the pillar even when bolted on tight....

Kinda thought they were there for a purpose
