What about Steve? Steve's a nice name...

Earlier oil bath air cleaner probably late 50's & yes I'm guessing.

Sorry - couldn't resist.

Re: can you name this?

It looks exactly like the one that came on my 54 Chevy sedan back in high school. I don't believe this is actually an oil "bath" type, I think it's more of an "oil mesh filter" (the piece that shows). I'm pretty sure the rest of the housing serves as a silencer for the carburetor. The mesh was rinsed in solvent and lightly coated in motor oil until it became severely caked with dirt and the engine would barely run. Then the cleaning process was repeated.

I've had earlier models on 46 & 47 Chevys that looked similar, and were actually filled with oil, but they looked more like this:

Re: can you name this?

You had it right. I think they were nearly if not exactly the same from 49-54. Depending on whether the car came with a Carter or Rochester carburetor, the flange and attaching clamp may have been different.

Re: can you name this?

My '63 had an oil bath on it when I bought it in '82. It had the original 230 6cyl back then.
