? about fuel tank color and cleaning
I took the fuel tanks out of my 51 and the 51 parts truck. One I am almost sure is galvanized outside. Did they do this in 51 to some? Also what is the best way to clean the inside of the fuel tank for old gummed up fuel and some rust?

Re: ? about fuel tank color and cleaning
I don't THINK they galvanized. I think they used what we call aluminized steel now. Resists rust but not rust proof.
Lots of different way to clean inside. You can get gallons of fuel injection cleaner at OSH, or a parts store. Let it soak overnight. Throw a handful of nuts & bolts in it and shakes it as long as you can. Also, Eastwoods & others sell stuff made for this - but I think it's the same stuff. Posted via Mobile Device |

Having KC and the Sunshine Band on the box helps during this stage. After you clean it you can get a purpose made coating that will not be attacked by the gas or additives. It pours in like paint, slosh it around until it starts to flash so it doesn't all end up in the bottom.

Re: ? about fuel tank color and cleaning
I take my tanks to a radiator shop and have them dipped. Comes back beautiful inside.
Last one cost me $55, but was well worth it!

Re: ? about fuel tank color and cleaning
Paint thinner and long chains rolled around inside always worked well for me. Save the stuff that comes out and spray weeds with it.

A new tank is 159 plus shipping. If yours is leaking or rusted, its a sound investment. http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/ca/full.aspx?Page=83
