Flushing power steering system first? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I just finished converting an old manual steering box into power steering on my 61 chevy with 350 SB. I have the brand new pump mounted, new hoses and newly rebuilt gearbox that's out of a 79 Chevy truck.

Do I need to flush the system before I proceed to bleeding the system. In other words, do I need to jack up the wheels, fill the resevoir, turn a few times and then pull the hose and drain it all? Or, can I just bleed the system and be good to go?

New pump, new hoses and rebuilt gearbox ?

Fill it, bleed it and enjoy it. Don't worry about flushing it.

The Power steering is the Saginaw pump ("A" Type) and gearbox out of a 79 Chevy 1/2 ton. The gearbox was rebuilt. Two hoses connect the two.

The original truck had manual steering (its no wonder they had a 15" steering wheel!). You couldn't hardly drive it!

Thanks for the response guys...I'm not going to do any more work than necessary. I'd feel better when the project is finished!

Factory wheel is actually 17"!

Enjoy the power steering now. I still have the original steering wheel and don't need that big now. Seems over kill with P/S.

be sure and install a filter that goes inside the return line...NAPA has them ...just a little insurance
