auxillary heater for shaved firewall/eliminate heater core
i did some searching but can't find anything specific on the forum.
anyone know of any type of electric auxillary heater that would fit under the dash and be able to hook up defrost/heat to be able to eliminate the heater core? kind regards

Only thing i know even close is a mojave heater but it needs coolant lines for heat. But its not big so you could mount it anywhere and hide the hoses under the hood.

Re: auxillary heater for shaved firewall/eliminate heater core
I think Summit may have a universal heater, but like stated above it would require coolant lines.
The alternators in these trucks do not put out enough amps to make using an electric heater an option I wouldn't think.

If amps is an issue he could always do the cs144 swap.

Re: auxillary heater for shaved firewall/eliminate heater core
Years back you could buy 12v underdash heaters that were designed for extra heat. They did not hook up to any vents but just blew out warm air like a hair dryer. At most they would take the chill out the cab. Maybe J.C. Whittney?

Re: auxillary heater for shaved firewall/eliminate heater core
i digress, it would be fine for coolant lines, as long as the core was self contained in the unit like the mojave one... without the big box on the firewall
thanks for the input, i understand the amperage required to run an electric one. thanks again guys!!! kind regards

Have you heard of the Vintage Air units. Heater and a/c all hides under dash.

Those used to be readily available for Jeeps but I haven't seen one in a while.

As a former over the road truck driver I would say to check out the Webasto and Espar websites I'm sure that they have something for you.

Re: auxillary heater for shaved firewall/eliminate heater core
I'm thinking you CAN get enough amps to run an electric heater.
Forgive me, my memory is a little fuzzy. A while back I was fixing an old VW bug, and looking online and talking with people on forums similar to this. Heating those old bugs was always a challenge, and many people were looking at electric options. On the bugs it just wasn't viable, because the best you could get was an 85 amp alternator, and I think we were looking at 100 amps necessary to get a decent amount of heat, more than just defrosting the windows. On a Chevy 350, I think it's possible to get alternators capable of 200 amps, that's plenty of juice to run a 1500W heater and still have enough left over to run your headlights, radio, ect ect. You couldn't do it on the stock alternator, of course, and you would need some heavy-gauge wiring, but I truly think it's possible.

Re: auxillary heater for shaved firewall/eliminate heater core
i'm thinking of running some water bulkhead fittings behind the rear of the engine on the firewall, they'll come out right under the dash for the vintageair heater/defroster. the one with the electronic controls is only 229 bucks, so i think i'll go that route, nice and smooth/hidden
thanks for all the options/opinions that's why this site kicks a$$

Re: auxillary heater for shaved firewall/eliminate heater core
I have the same issue and picked up one of these http://www.carid.com/flex-a-lite/ite...Fc07MgodDV8ASg
That's when I decided I am just going to custom build something since there's nothing stealth that's really adaptable to our trucks. I'll post pix when I'm done building it. |

Re: auxillary heater for shaved firewall/eliminate heater core
If you want to kinda hide the heater hoses a fox body mustang had metal tubes that ran down the side of the intake close to the valve cover.A set of those tubes and make them fit right might work for you.
