Has anyone used different ignition keys?

I'm thinking of changing my ignition key with a Saab key and moving it to the left side of the steering wheel. Has anyone else done anything like it?

Not that I've seen - what's the motivation, and what would you do about the door locks?

Re: Has anyone used different ignition keys?

Porsches are there! I'm left handed and I'm always passing the keys from my left to right and thought a different style key in a different place will make thieves have a double thought on stealing it. Yea, I'm weird like that. Door locks would be Saab. I'd have remote locks and use those instead of stock GM ones.

I'm assuming you're talking OLD Saab then - all the Saab's I've dealt with the ignition switch is integral to the console assembly underneath.

It would be unique that's for sure! I must say though, without a steering column lock / hood lock these old trucks (and all old cars) are a cinch to hotwire, not sure a thief would be too worried about the ignition switch.

Re: Has anyone used different ignition keys?

I'd use a newer Saab with the center console key and move it. I have an 06 convertible and like the unusual key shape.

You may find prior generation of saabs ('79-'93) to be a better key donor, the locks and ignition match up more closely to what we have.

Re: Has anyone used different ignition keys?

I had a Jeep re-keyed so it took the same key as the pick-up. One less key on the ring, no more looking close to see which was which.
