Transfer case issue, Two Leaks.
On my 72' Blazer I have two oil leaks on the transfer case. These two leaks leave a noticeable oil spot when parked over a period of time. To try and solve my problem i tightened the bolts that i thought might have been an issue , but i still get some leaks. I would like to get some advice on this issue i would gladly appreciate any info, I have provided two pictures where the leaks that i assume are coming from.

On the top picture, on the bottom bolt is where i seem to find little oil drips.

The cover on the left has a needle bearing in it. Be very careful when you take it off, which is what you're going to have to do if you want to fix the leak. Use some grease to hold the bearings in place when you reinstall it.
It's hard to tell where the oil is coming from on the speedo adapter in your pic, but the most common cause of leaks there is just an O-ring. |

Thanks Greg, I found a sleeve on amazon for $15.99, your info definitively made my day.
Also i was wondering on the top pic where i also have small oil drips. Can i fix that issue by replacing a certain gasket or part ? Any thoughts or opinions??? Thanks |

Looks like you're leaking ATF...
I've had two cases that were filled with ATF by the PO's. They should have gear oil. |

so if you have atf already in the tc, would i just drain the aft and add gear oil or would would i have to get all the atf out first,
whats the best grear oil to use? synthetic? |

I am going thru ATF in the transfer case right now, but it is the seals between the th350 and the 205 are shot, so it is leaking down from the trans. Keep an eye on the trans fluid.

You could just bypass all of this mechanical speedo and recalibration junk by going with one of the new GPS-enabled speedometers. Autometer sells them, and I'm sure other companies do as well. The speedometer displays your speed based on actual movement across the ground, so larger tires and/or hi-range vs. low-range issues don't matter at all.
I'm thinking of going this route on my own build just for the simplicity (and accuracy) of it, but in your case it can also allow you to seal up those leaking parts once and for all. -G

Autometer also sells electronic speedometers and electronic sending units. You plug the sending unit into your trans, run the wires then calibrate by driving exactly two miles.

I cannot remember, but I think the bolt holes on the round cover plate on the back of the NP 205 are not blind (they go all the way through the case). Therefore, in addition to the gasket, you need to apply thread sealant to the bolts to prevent fluid from passing by the threads and leaking from beneath the bolt heads. Same issue as some of the engine head bolts that are tapped right into water passages.

So how complicated is it to change the seals on a transfer case? I have manuals and mechanic books for this subject, but should i just take it to a Certified transfer case shop, Any opinions?
