Brake Fluid Contamination Test

To check for possible brake fluid contamination, compare " known good " brake fluid with test samples as follows.
Use 2 glass or plastic containers filled with about 4 oz. of water each, use 2 oz. of new brake fluid and it to one container.
Use 2oz. of sample brake fluid & add to other container. New fluid will tend to be milky white when mixed with water.
If old fluid sample mixed with water is pink to green color it may be contaminated with anti freeze.
If black to green [ floating ] it may be contaminated with motor oil.
If red color [floating] it may be contaminated with p/s fluid or trans fluid.
If multi colored [floating] it may be contaminated with gas, diesel, solvent or other refined petroleum product.
Petroleum contamination requires replacement of all Hydraulic components that came in contact with fluid. It swells seals and causes corrosion.
