Door seal installation

Hey guys,

I was reading another post from a fellow 60-66 reader about door weatherstipping.

I just tore mine out because the previous owner made a complete mess trying to install them. Adhesive was all over the place.

What's the best way to put these on? I was thinking of running a bead deep in the stripping, then sliding them on and holding them on with 2" tape until the adhesive sets up.

Anyone have a better way? I'm going to be painting the entire cab and jambs in the next couple of weeks and want to minimize any messes I can!

Re: Door seal installation

That's exactly what I did with mine, I think getting a quality adhesive was the key though. I used 3M weatherstrip adhesive on mine.

Re: Door seal installation

If you use 3M weatherstripping adhesive, you need to lightly coat both parts, let them sit for a few to get tacky, then press them together. I found out that those $0.10 each acid brushes from a hardware store work pretty well. Use one for a few minutes, then chuck it and grab a new one.
Also, Keep some lacquer thinner handy, in case you get strings.
Good Luck!

This method is likely best for sure bond. A drawback may be that once it touches, be sure it is in exactly the correct position, as you don't get many second chances, if any.
Having so many thumbs on my hands, I need to use the earlier technique to enable adjustable-shifting after making initial contact with the 2 surfaces. BTW: This method--"running a bead deep in the stripping, then sliding them on and holding them on with 2" tape until the adhesive sets up"--works long-term also!

Thanks luvbowties,
That's a very important note I forgot to mention.

Re: Door seal installation

Use a scuff pad on the flange to make sure the glue has a good surface to bite into since you'll have fresh paint.
