Loving an old square is a money pit..
Have my new motor installed crate 330hp roller cam ,vortec heads ,summit ceramic long tube headers ,new champion 2 row 1 inch tube alloy radiator with shroud and twin 14 inch thermo fans.
New bilsten shocks all round to stop it bouncing off the road with all those new horses. So no more smokey start ups from the tired old 305 no more leaking radiator and exhaust manifolds. MY Wallet draining days are over just drive and enjoy. ![]() Some disappointment felt this morning when a free swimming pool appeared on the passengers side floor well. The heater core has decided to leak all my new coolant out........ I will not be beat you @%#&^ old **** box....Wheres the credit card????? |

Re: Loving an old square is a money pit..
I have three trucks so it seems I am always having to work on one of them. The '92 K-3500 requires less attention, but I just had to put a new radiator in it so I could tow the '75 C-30 dually home.

Re: Loving an old square is a money pit..
Did you ever confirm that your motor had a roller cam? I seem to remember some posts where we discussed that... Mine ran for almost a month before I had to reload my money gun and shoot at it some more.. Part of the joy I guess...

Re: Loving an old square is a money pit..
It does get old but next time it gets you down on the way to the parts store swing through a dealership and look at the price of a new one and when you get to the parts store it will hurt alot less.

Re: Loving an old square is a money pit..
And just to pour salt in the wound, down the road is that other guy and his truck. Floorboards so rusty you can see through down to the road, fenders five different colors and STILL all dented to heck and falling apart, using an old milk crate as a seat, no muffler, truck is bouncing all over the place because the shocks are completely shot, steel belting showing through on three tires, blows a plume of smoke every morning, and IT'S NEVER LEFT HIM STRANDED!
You know he hasn't spent a single cent on his truck other than gas and the two quarts of oil it burns per week, and he starts it up and drives it every day. And I've just spend $7000 on my truck in the last six months and I've only been able to drive it twice!!! ![]()

I sold a late model vehicle with 15000 miles on it to buy this old truck and the one I sold cost me nothing but oil and filters in the whole time I owned it BUT it was sterile to drive and was just transport.I love my square and it is just plain fun to drive so I will just keep fixing it until there is nothing left to fix. After the heater core is done I have a full weather seal kit to go in and then I noticed the air cond compressor is a bit noisey and I would not mind getting a new............................blah blah blah I don't smoke or drink much so gota spend my money on something ![]() |

Re: Loving an old square is a money pit..
I've learned not to mix the total project trucks with my transportation needs (the hard way). My driver is 25 years old, but it's the best condition I could afford. Spend the dough up front and there are fewer worries. But we all have the instinct to "rescue" the trucks that just need a couple of things here and there...thousands $ later!

Re: Loving an old square is a money pit..
I had to have some work done to mine and as the mechanic pulled back in from the test drive the heater core gave out. Luckily he was knew these trucks well and had it fixed in no time.
When they get this old things break and will nickel and dime you. It is all part of the fun.

Re: Loving an old square is a money pit..
The way I think about it is; If I had gone to a dealership and bought a new car, say for 20,000, I'd have a car payment of $400 or so a month. With my old GMC Iinstead of throwing $400 a month away on a terrible investment, most of which is going to finance costs, I'm putting it into something that I actually own. If I did end up putting $400 a month into my truck for 60 months I'd have one sweet truck worth much more than a new car would after 60 months on the road.
When you think about it that way, it's not such a money pit.

Re: Loving an old square is a money pit..
Always the case. When I bought mine I was told it ran and drove fine. As it was I barely made it home. Luckily the guy I bought it from was an idiot and it only cost me $200 to get it on the road again.
