so you guys have beaten into me not to buy an engine unless you hear it run. Thats not going to happen at the junkyard or craigslist obviously.
SO that leaves searching until you find somebody will to sell an engine while its still in a wrecked car or something.

Or buy a car and pull the motor and scrap the rest.

So I need to know what the hulk of say a 73-80 C-10 would be worth minus the engine at a scrap yard.

That would then determine what I'm paying for the engine and how much I can spend on the car/truck.

Also whats the going rate for a 454? I see them for around $700-$1000 on CL and they are already pulled and sitting on a tire with no way to hear it run.

Online chatter makes it seems like I should be able to find one for $400. is that realistic?

If I plan on doing a full build on it would I be better off just finding/buying a core and skipping all the other work?

scrap prices around here change daily but a truck should bring $200~400

You can also pull the disc brake stuff and sell it to someone wanting to swap from drums.and if it has a good trans and rear end Craigslist is your friend.

I picked up an UGLY! 76 350/350 12 bolt 373 posi truck running and driving for $600 a few years ago. All I needed was the dis brakes and rear end, that truck made me some decent mone before I scrapped it.

200 dollars a ton here. But, a 73-87 will part out for some serious money. I make more money parting a 73-87 than I do a 67-72 truck. The parts are harder to find for them.

As most have said, scrap will be ~$300 range, but if you have the time its definitely worth parting them out.

i was hoping not to have to sanford and son it. I dont have much room to work.
I found a c-10 for 1350 with a running motor. unfortunately the motor and accesories are painted in a GB Packers theme.

Keep in mind if the vehicle does not have any paperwork you won't be able to scrap it here.

When looking for a used engine at Ecology or Pick A Part, I try and find something that looks like it was just wrecked. Had good luck getting a 350 out of a early 70's El Camino that way. Went on a rainy day and even got the 50% discount. Don't know if they are still doing that at ecology though.

i was at ecology in oceanside last weekend. wasnt looking for motors at the time but got some good parts.
they also have the warrenty program so id only be out the labor if its a cracked block.
how much do junkyard engines go for at a u-pull junkyard?

You would scrap that?! Same as it would be for any half ton. They don't care if its older or newer. It's all about the weight

They'd probably give me $400 for my 67 now (not scrapping it). I scrapped a complete 455 engine and didn't get much for it. Wish I had it now

I'll let you in on my secret since I live in Alaska now. Santa Fe Springs Ecology is loaded...always. Only one I go to and there are usually at least 3-4 67-72's and 10-15 73-87's. A bunch of other good vans etc. I posted up a thread a month or two ago from when I was there. There was a 3/4 Highlander with a new GM Target 350 in it.

hmm that ecology isnt to far. ive been to the long beach and oceanside ones. lbc had a couple of our trucks. ocean side had one and it was stripped to almost nothing.
The area around the longbeach ecology has a few other yards too which is cool.
