GMC project

well found a 49-50 GMC the other day and decided to buy it
very few parts missing and hope to put her back on the road the way she looks.

Actually looks like the cab corners are solid. That's a miracle. You said 49-50? Does that mean no title?

no paperwork but now it is home we can find out excatly what she is, the door art is original not sure what the company was but with the flat bed and racks that are on it seems it may have been some sort of welding possibly. ill post some more pics of it today

well had to look it up it is a 1952 according to the serial number tag in the cab.

and that info i got from OldGMCtrucks.com stats also that it has a 228 engine, i did not know there was a difference way back then between the motors also

Yes the GMC 228 was the standard engine for a half ton. It is a totally different engine from the Chevrolet, larger, heavier, and had a bigger oil pan.

Most local libraries keep old City Directories (like a phone book but with more information, used by businesses). You can call the reference desk and the librarians will do some research and tell you what the business was, or you could do it yourself. The phone number and truck year will help isolate the time frame. Good research librarians live to do these types of searches, I have a friend that is one and really likes getting back into the old books. I do a lot of searchs trying to establish historic building uses to justify proposed building uses or "grandfathered" construction types in the same structure for zoning applications or building permits.

And it is a great truck. Mine had the original appliance repair company graphics on the door, but I stripped it off before patina stuff was cool....

thanks everyone, visited some buddies who make a hard living wheeling and dealing parts and scored some very good pieces to put this thinkg back together.

they had a set of running boards that were in very good shape that have already been cut off for running a flatbed, nice set of taillight housings with glass lenses and a blue dot in them, the hood latch panel, a radiator that has been tested, 12 volt starter, a 40's tailgate (just because it had gmc on it). I have another gmc cab with some a good firewall in it that i will put into this one.

"Way back then" is the only time there WAS a difference. There's essentially no mechanical difference between a Chevrolet and a GMC today. Back then the GMC really was intended to be a more heavy duty truck. In the 50's the motors were from a Pontiac, I believe. Others can tell you better.


SCHRUM - You fix the rusted out cab corners the same way you do ANY rusted out sheet metal on these trucks. You cut it out to undamaged metal and weld in replacement metal. And no matter what ANYONE tells you, there's no other acceptable way. NOT fiberglass, not pop riveting in new metal, nothing. You're young and you likely have no ability to weld - yet. Time to learn if you're gonna own a 60 year old truck.
