Factory flatbed chassis question

I ran across a 62 model c20 4 speed with what appears to be a wood flatbed. The owner acquired it in an estate sale and knows little to nothing about the truck.

Let's assume worse case that is was a factory order with the flatbed or it was just a cab and chassis order, would the chassis be built differently to keep me from buying a fleetside bed and installing it in place of the flatbed?

I know this is somewhat of a vague question, but I'm sure there are people here that have kinda ran into this issue before. Just thought I'd inquire before I pursue a project that can't be done.

Thanks, Jason.

Re: Factory flatbed chassis question

depends on the wheel base my friend.

I think the Shorts are 115" and the longs are 127" wheel base, if it the later then your good for the long bed.

Re: Factory flatbed chassis question

If it is in fact a C20, then a long bed should bolt right onto the frame. But it will need to be a '60-'62 bed, as those years of frames are wider than the '63+ frames. The later model beds can be modified to bolt up though.

Re: Factory flatbed chassis question

if you can get a look at the vin on the lh door post, this chart below should help you:
I am guessing that if it is a 62 c/20 cab chassis the vin should start like this: 2C253X1xxxxx
the 6th digit- a letter-will be the plant, and the last 6 will be the serial #

Re: Factory flatbed chassis question

Good deal, plenty of great information, thank you guys.

I'm going to go look at it one day this week after work, he's about an hour up the road from me.

There's a salvage yard out towards Asheboro that mainly deals in older 50's and 60's vehicles, he has a few 60-66 trucks I could get a bed off of.

Thank you Captainfab on the info about beds for 60-62, I'll keep that in mind.

Re: Factory flatbed chassis question

if it is a factory chassis cab you wil need to source some frame to bed supports from a donor truck

Re: Factory flatbed chassis question

I had him text me the first 5 of the VIN, it is a factory pickup bed truck. So that's good news.

Thanks again for posting the VIN decode for me, I should of thought to do that myself.
