Water Pump Question - '86 K10 -
My water pump has gone bad and I've noticed that these are made out of either iron (standard ones) and some companies like Edelbrock make aluminum ones. I'm wondering is it worth spending the extra dough on an aluminum "performance" one? Or should I get the standard iron pump and maybe spray on a coat of high-temp paint to help keep it from rusting so badly? The one that went bad for me recently was only three years old and very badly rusted.

Id go with the iron . I really don't think the aluminum one that is allegedly high performance is that much better for the buck

I agree , i am running both types and really cant tell the difference between either truck....The alum weighs a bunch less , looks a little nicer but costs 2-3 times as much...On a performance motor i would go aluminum just for the weight ,and alum has better cooling properties , not sure if the water pump its self is that much of a difference when cooling but every little bit helps with a radical motor...

Go with the iron but buy a new GM brand not autozone and it should last a long time.

The performance pumps supposedly have a better impeller design, you can get them in iron or aluminum to save weight. Personally in an application like a 4000# truck I wouldnt even mess with an aluminum pump, but thats just me. There's a lot more areas that could stand to lose some weight before I pop for an aluminum pump. If cooling is a concern Id probably try to find out why its running hot before spending the extra cash on a high perf pump. If you really need the extra flow but are tight on cash there are a few companies that offer a disc that you rivet to your impeller for a few bucks.
I always slap some paint on a pump before I put it on. Posted via Mobile Device |
