Inner workings of turn signals?

Hello all, I just noticed by 1958 shop manual dos not inlude any information regarding how the turn signals work, diagram of the system, etc. I have to assume this is the case because turn signals were options back then? Anyway, my truck has original signals and they work fine, they just dont work unless you manually hold the turnsignal lever. Im sure the little spring devices in the signal cup have something to do with this. ANyway, I wanted to work on this and there doesnt seem to be anything in the shop manual. anyone have any references? thanks, Mark

I have a laminated color wire diagram that came with my truck. It was very useful when I rewired from scratch on my 57. It's odd sized so it will take me a minute to scan it. Other than that, idk, my truck did not have a turn signal on the column, i had to go aftermarket.

I doubt there's a difference with the turn signal wiring between the 57 and 58. Hope this helps.

That is just part of the charm of owning an older truck. I once had an AD that needed a coat hanger to work the wiper arms on long hills...only had one girl friend that was up to the task. Sounds like a worn spring or detent. This is for a tri five car but might help, it has a diagram too. http://www.trifive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72218

Check to see if the springs are in place. Here's a pic of mine showing what it looks like. I have an extra one if you need any parts. Not a good pic but those round things at about 5 oclock and 2 oclock are what detents it if I remember right. The spring loaded things are what the tab on the steering wheel hits to reset it after a turn. BTW, is your steering wheel straight? If it isn't the turn signals won't do right.
