51 GMC New Project

Hey everyone. Spend most of my time here on the 67-72 and 73-87 forums. However the fiance' has been wanting a 47-53 GMC and I happened across this 51 earlier this week. Paid $400 for it with a good Iowa title. It's just going to sit for now while I finish up some other projects, but for the price couldn't pass it up.

Re: 51 GMC New Project

$400 with a title is an awesome price. I paid that for a parts truck with no title last year. Great score!

Also, welcome to our section of the board!

Lucky SOB! LOL! Good for you! I have a 51 Chevy but mine does not have the signals in the fenders. Is that a GMC only thing?

Ya think? Wow, great score. Looks like a 5-lug rear in it already?

Wow, it looks like you really did good on that one. It really looks like a nice start on a truck for your gal.

Re: 51 GMC New Project

Looks like a great start. I have a chance to buy a 51 in pieces but all there. 350 Chevy/tranny and a load of new part ready to go on. All original body. What do you guys think it should be worth?

Re: 51 GMC New Project

From what little I know about these I'm pretty sure the turn signals in the fenders is a gmc only thing. It does already have a 5 lug rear end in it from what I was told out of a camaro and it has either a nova or camaro front stub already. I haven't decided if I am going to use this frame or not. Right now I;m leaning towards putting this body on a 4x4 S10 chassis, but we'll see.

I should also mention that I put an offer in on another truck the guy had and he called me today to tell me to come get it next weekend. It;s a 47 3/4 ton chevy. Has title, and is mostly complete. ONly missing headlights and door windows from what I can tell and the body is pretty solid. I will post pics after I get it drug home.

What a deal. I paid 5 times that much for a truck that needed 5 times as much work. But once the bug bites, you go with what you can get.

Re: 51 GMC New Project

Hey everyone! I am new to the forum but I have done a lot of reading & research on the different projects y'all have been working on! As my fiance posted, this will be my first project (and a great learning tool for a future build I already have planned!). I am currently going to school outside of the US so on my breaks when I'm home we'll be doing as much as we can & we'll keep you all up-to-date! Thanks & enjoy!

Re: 51 GMC New Project

Finally got the 47 drug home tonight. Found some of the missing pieces in the cab so that was good, but found more rust than what I was expecting. Don't feel like I got hurt on the price though. He still has the 48 sitting out there and supposively someone else is coming to look at it. I told him if he still had it the end of April to give me a call. Anyways here are some pics of the 47.

Re: 51 GMC New Project

Well I have since aquired a few more pieces for this project. About 3 weeks ago I picked up a wrecked S10 for the frame and driveline. This last weekend I picked up a pretty nice GMC front clip that came with a free cab lol.

Re: 51 GMC New Project

I'm guessing it was to run larger tires that stuck out to far.

Gotcha. I know of the Pinegars, but that's about it. Went to high school with some of them. Kayla graduated a year ahead of me

Re: 51 GMC New Project

Thanks guys.

Whammer- He doesn't have it anymore, I actually called him last week about it. I've found a ton of these trucks in Iowa and in like south dakota, minnesota, Omaha, and KC areas. Just jump on craigslist. There is a pair of them for sale in Panora I know on craigslist for $1000 and they look like pretty decent for the money.
