Name that gasket!

My gear box (power steering) is leaking fluid at a pretty fast rate from here:

...so I need to replace that gasket.

Anyone know what the gasket is called that I need?

I've never messed with the gear box so any helpful tips to make my life easier are appreciated as well!

Re: Name that gasket!

I think its the input shaft seal. Maybe someone more experienced will chime in.

Re: Name that gasket!

I replaced that seal on my box if its the one that under the steering shaft your talking about. That big nut looking thing has a couple big o- rings under it but usually leaks from the shaft seal. I had to buy a steering box seal kit just for that one seal. When you take the steering shaft off the box you'll find a snap ring just above the seal. Remove snap ring. The seal was a pain to remove. I used a drill with a tiny bit and drilled the seal in the center. Take your time so not to hit the shaft on the box. I drilled two hole 90 degrees apart. Then used a small machine screw into the holes and pulled with vice grip. Going back in I used a thin wall socket same diameter as seal and lightly tapped in. You may have to use a flat head punch to do final seating of seal. make sure you tap the seal in a circular motion with the punch as not to make it crooked on the hole.I had to it all depends what kind of socket you choose. Take your time not that hard. Also replace the rag joint while your at it.

Is this the kit you are referring to Danz?

Re: Name that gasket!

I did one the other day.

You don't have to take the entire threaded cartridge out to change just the seal but I was replacing all of the seals in this particular gearbox and went ahead and blew it all apart to get it all clean inside.

Nice work firefighter. When you put that threade piece back in, did you just screw it back in till it bottom out an stop? I was tould that it had a preload setting after bottoming out just curious what you did. That's why I didn't do the whole seal package and only shaft seal didn't want to mess with the preload.

Re: Name that gasket!

I do not know the correct way to set them and probably don't have the needed tools anyway so I just count the threads and make a reference mark so I can turn it back in to the same place it was before I disassembled it.

Probably not ideal but I have changed a whole lot of them with good success that way. I used to do fleet maintenace for the Postal Service and the mail trucks all needed them changed pretty regularly.

Re: Name that gasket!

The pitman shaft seal is much easier to replace in the truck without removing the box. Just remove pitman arm and then the snap ring. Start engine and turn steering to the lock. It will blow the seal out and into the drain pan underneath. Don't forget the drain pain !

Re: Name that gasket!

Not at all. It's just easier and saner to do it on a bench. The steering shaft will be in your way otherwise. I hate working under a fender well myself. When you remove the box you can get it all cleaner too so there's no contaminates getting into the system.

Re: Name that gasket!

Mine just leaks everywhere. I've never had one apart. If I take it out I might just core charge it for a rebuilt one. They don't look to be that much.
