new truck new questions

New here and got a couple questions. I am going to be buying an 82 gmc dump truck. I believe it is a c60. I got the VIN and was wondering if anyone had a vin decoder or knew of a good one to use? The pic of the VIN plate says the gvw is 22800. It has a 4x8x12 dump box and was converted to a 427 gasser from a diesel. Was also wondering what diesels were originally in these trucks. The VIN is 1gth6d1f1cv566283. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: new truck new questions

In a C60, I think it was just the 8.2L Detroit. Larger ones had a 3208 CAT and an air-cooled Deutz as an option.

Can you double check the VIN by chance, I wasn't able to come up with anything. The program I used didn't tell me it was invalid, just that it couldn't find it.

Re: new truck new questions

That's what it is. The guy selling it sent me a picture of the VIN tag. I tried to upload the pic but aparently photobucket hates me.

Re: new truck new questions

I agree. The truck most likely would have had an 8.2 Detroit.

Re: new truck new questions

I found a vin decoder and that's what it was. May look at putting a 5.9 Cummins in it eventually but it will remain a gasser for a while. I will try and post some pics when I get it. I am sure I will have a ton of questions once I get it home.

Re: new truck new questions

Earlier Models of that style truck (somewhere around '78) were also available with a 4-53 Detroit.

Re: new truck new questions

I spent a little time researching the 8.2 and didn't find much good about them. How was the 4-53?

Well, Detroits are kind of like Harley-Davidson motorcycles, you either love them or hate them. Most of us on here seem to be Detroit fans.

They are actually great little engines. They like to leak oil and are loud, but to most of us, it is music.

Only a short clip, but it looks good. Clean, nice sheet metal, I like the spoke wheels, engine sounds healthy, nice dump body. I notice it has an electric powered hydraulic dump.

I'm not a fan of crew cab trucks, but they do serve a purpose for some.

But I would thoroughly check it over a lot more, if you decide to buy it.

Re: new truck new questions

I have never had a Detroit that's just what I found online. I will give it a good look over before any money changes hands. It was owned by the state of Idaho before this guy got it. They drove it about 350 miles right after they bought it. Only 40000 miles on the truck.

Re: new truck new questions

By the way, I want to point out that the 8.2 and the old 2-Stroke Detroits (53 Series, 71 Series and the 92 Series) are whole completely different engines.

Your research on the 8.2 engine is just about right. I don't know a whole lot about them, but I do know that they were not the best engines.

Re: new truck new questions

Hi. when I was in the snowcat business

Hi. when I was in the snowcat business I owned a 1979 GMC 7000 with the 453T with jake brake, 5x2 trans and tilt hood. It had a Hiab 550 crane behind the cab and roll back, I used to haul 14000 lb groomers in and out of the colorado ski areas with out any problems. That was one of the best motors that I have ever owned and it was fun to drive with the 453T, I would take the 453 over the 8.2 any day. That was a better truck than they build today.

Re: new truck new questions

if you are really looknig for power go with the 6v53t in it over the 453t. look for a mill spec one 775turq and 315ish hp in top trim. 453 is =ish to a 6bt stock to stock a 6v is more lick you get in the new c60 trucks

Re: new truck new questions

if I need more than the 453T I've got a 289 Pete with a silver 8v92T with 445 hp, if thats not enough I have a pair of skid mounted 16v71TT sitting here. One of these days I'm going to light these 16s and wake up the neighbors about a mile away.

Re: new truck new questions

If you fire the 16V-71's I know we would all love to hear it on a video. We even have a special thread going "Detroit Diesel Thread".

What were the engines used for?

Re: new truck new questions

Hi Bill, these were both gen set engines, I think they are impressive just sitting there, they don't even have to be running. I'm thinking about mounting them on a trailer in tandem, crank to crank and take them to truck and antique engine shows like the ATHS in Brooks Oregon. Most people have never seen let alone heard engines like these. 32 cylinders x 71 cubic inchs of twin turbo detroit diesel, maybe mount a couple of my 271s on there to. The 271s were rail reefer motors.

Re: new truck new questions

I found it on craigslist in Bozeman Montana. It was owned by the US Forrest service and then by the Idaho department of corrections. It is in good shape and runs awesome. Only has 44000 miles on it.

Anyone know where to get a good service manual for these trucks? I have a few things to take care of on it and need some wiring schematics.

eBay....some results when I searched "1982 GMC Medium Duty"

1982 GMC MEDIUM DUTY TRUCK SHOP SERVICE MANUAL
1982 GMC Medium Duty Trucks Shop Manual 2pcs
1982 GMC MEDIUM DUTY TRUCKS ORIGINAL OWNERS MANUAL SERVICE GUIDE
1982 GMC MEDIUM DUTY TRUCKS OWNERS MANUAL-FREE S/H MINT
1982 GMC MEDIUM DUTY OWNERS MANUAL SET
1982 GMC MEDIUM DUTY TRUCK SERVICE REPAIR MANUAL
1982 GMC Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Factory Wiring Diagrams

You will see that some of those are duplicates and not nearly all of the search results...
