I am not really good with big blocks so someone else would probably be better help than I would. JIM

some say the 820 heads are junk, some say they are ok. if i remember correctly, they are a smog head. they are similar to the 049 castings. the 820 heads are decent street heads. they are open chamber so on a 396/402, you won`t get much more that about 9 to 1. to get more compression from a 396/402, you need custom pistons or use high compression closed chamber pistons. you loose about 1 point of compression going from closed to open chambers.

3993820 1971 402...300, 330 hp LS-3 Open 113.0cc
454...365 hp LS-5

There's better BB heads, but these will make some decent HP for a semi-mild motor.

LS-5's were no slouches...

Looked in the Production Engine Remanfactures Association book and those heads are listed in the chevy v-8 passenger section and say year 1972-68, cid 400-396, litre 6.6, bore 4.125, Description Big Block. It also lists 3969854, 3931063, and 3964290. Hope this helps.
