P/S question for Captainfab

Hey Capt!
I was going to PM you but I figured that I would post this question on the boards so others could see. Here it is!

I bought the power steering bracket and tube/flange kit from you, I have a brand new steering box, and a power steering pump and the necessary brackets for a V8. Now I need hoses. While looking on Rockauto for the hoses I found that there are many different hoses available, with different bends and such. Just need to know which set to order to make it look right.

Let us know which ones you prefer!

BTW guys, Thought I'd let ya know that Rockauto has power steering gear boxes for this conversion for cheap. I got a Lares brand remaned unit for $108 plus shipping (and then 5% off of that with a readily available coupon code). These are nice units with a lifetime warrenty and the company seems to focus on the collector car market.

Lares
Part #: 1074

Thanks!!!!

Re: P/S question for Captainfab

It's been over 10 years since I have done a PS conversion, and I just used a pressure hose I had from a donor.

What hose to use is going to partially going to depend on what engine you have. If a small block or big block, do you have a short water pump like should be in these trucks, or a long water pump? If you have a short water pump, a hose for a '68-'72 truck should fit reasonable well. As an alternative to a factory hose, you can also have a custom hydraulic hose made up for the pressure hose. The return hose, can have just hose clamps on each end. Although you do need to use a hose made for use with oil/PS fluid.

Re: P/S question for Captainfab

I used a serpentine set up, but the PS pump is low on the driver side. I got a stock hose for a 75 C10 and it fit pretty well. I can dig up the part number if you want.

I used 1972 c10 hoses on mine. Be sure you get the right hose becuse the later ones had an O-ring type fitting

Re: P/S question for Captainfab

Thanks alot guys! What I did was look up hoses for a 75 C10 and I will have to pick which ones I want from there. I knew the hoses changed around 1980 from the flared to the o-ring style. Theres just so many different part numbers

Re: P/S question for Captainfab

I had a lot of trouble with hoses on my conversion. The return line is no problem. It's not under pressure, and at the pump end of the return line all you have is a hose barb and a hose secured with a hose clamp anyway.

On the pressure side, I tried a lot of different hoses from different year model trucks before I ended up fabricating a steel braided hose with AN fittings. The braided hose is working fine so far, and I drive my truck every day

In case I cant get one to fit, would you point me in the right direction as to where to get the parts to do a custom hose like what you have?

When i get home tonight I'll list the parts. Making braided steel hoses is not too hard, but if you've never done it you sort of have to learn the technique. I learned to make them working on my uncle's race cars, so I'm comfortable with it.

It's also kind of expensive if you don't have some left over hose and fittings laying around.

Re: P/S question for Captainfab

That sounds pretty good. I make hoses a lot at work so it shouldn't be a big deal for me. Sure do appreciate all the help guys
