Air filter/cleaner question

I have a 71 P10 with an 250 inline 6. It originally came with an offset air cleaner that had a riser/connector tube that went from the carb to air filter house. A hose would run from the side of that connector and into the side of the valve cover (see pic of an example).

Mine is missing the offset air cleaner and connector but still has the hose coming out of the valve cover. So my question is would there be any issues with just taking that hose off and plugging the hole in the valve cover and then putting smaller air cleaner? Found one for that is 6" x 2.5" that will fit the space and carb.

Thanks!

Re: Air filter/cleaner question

The hose is the crankcase breather and it uses the carb. inlet to evacuate the crankcase.
While you could just use a breather you loose the positive vacuum effect.
Also the TAC function is lost for warming inlet air by not using the air cleaner assy.

The type of circular air filter that would fit in the space is really too small for the engine. Might want to look at fabricating an elbow similar to the factory rise and cross over the engine to the cold side. Then use a cone shape hose mount filter so popular on cold air inlet kits. In fact a universal kit might be a good start.

Re: Air filter/cleaner question

My Dad ran a smaller filter that that on a 305 V6 for years and it didn't seem affect the mpg or power. It does need changing more often though. Some filters like Wix provides CFM rating on box.

Is there any 3/8" or larger ports on intake to run a PCV?
