Help me Choose a Motor
My mid seventies 305 is starting to burn more and more oil, tick, and is having trouble pulling itself around. I am looking to put another mill in, just looking for advise. Low buck, low tech, daily driver. My '72 K10 is a worker, used as a truck and driven to work usually. GM TBI 350? I found a 327 on a local classified site. Suggestions? This has to pass the warden too, so $1000? $2000?

A TBI 350 is a great choice for a DD. If you keep the overdrive trans, that will help too. Save thing for a later Vortec, lots of power, simple, available. Either of these would make a good swap. The fuel tank is probably the biggest issue.

Either of the above are great suggestions.I think you would be miles ahead on the crate due to the warranty but a later model Vortec with a AOD would be sweet for the milage.I think the 290hp crate can be had for lessthan $2000 also.

Yeah pace performance has a 300hp 350 with a edelbrock intake installed on it already for $1899 free shipping. You cant beat that deal. This is what I will probably end up doing when my 350 dies. I have bought 2 crate engines from them as well

Is there a simple resolution for the fuel tank issue? I'm guessing an inline electric fuel pump, but do I have to do a return line? Just an electrical hook up for the TBI?

You have to have a return line for TBI, TPI, Vortec, and LT1 fuel injection. For an LS there is a way around it. You can use a stock tank with an external pump, but I wouldn't. You will be miles ahead (and safer) with an external tank and may as well get one with a pump in it. I have used a TBI S10 Blazer one, but big TBI Blazer may also work well.

Crate motor all the way. Under $2k with warranty can't be beat. Buying off Craigslist you could get a pile of "newly rebuilt" junk for $1000 that will need a rebuild in 6 months. Not worth it if you are planning on keeping the truck.

Question is are you going to keep the TBI or carb the motor? Carb the motor you dont have to have a return line. You will have to for Fuel injection.
However, I would steer you away from a used TBI engine. Odds are they are worn out and you will eat all repairs since they are buyer risk only. If you want quality and budget in mind........buy crate, get a used 700r4 dirt cheap and have it gone through. I buy them around here for $150 and put $600 into them just as a rebuild. Well, more if you build them up for high horsepower. But crates are easy to do, ready to run, and you get a warranty....as long as its installed they way they want it. |
