power to manual steering - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I did do a search and well not the info I was looking for. At the moment my ole truck has power steering. It's been fine but now I'm getting ready for a tear down I need some info. I know that to go from power steering to manual I need the box and pitman arm. But what else do I need? Are the boxes same length and mount the same? Any variations in the center link? Also will the stock splines on the column to rag joint to box work? I've seen some companies list the boxes as having different splines than that of the power steering boxes. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just cut the belt and run a resivior for lubrication. These boxes are easy enough to turn as is. Done mine like such for 4 yrs.

Manual boxes are out there.
Just have to look.
Mine was bolt in.
The manual intermediate shaft from power box different

I went to power from manual in my 78 C10. I used the corresponding pitman arms, but the boxes bolted up to the frame the same. The linkage is all the same. I really hated parking that old beast without power steering. I don't remember if the rag joint was different, but I don't think it was.

i looped the lines on my box. i dont even have the power steering pump on it anymore. i have strong arms from riding bmx bikes but my cousin drove it just fine. once he realized he cant turn the wheel when the truck isnt rolling

What do you mean by manual intermediate shaft is different from the power boxes? Thanks for the help folks.

Depends on what you get the shafts should be the same. I'm fairly certain the pitman arms are interchangeable as well. The only time I've ran into an issue going the opposite route of course is with a rear steer system in the older cars. You can use either box but if using a power box or manual box made for front steer linkage the pitman arms are different diameter
