man, I'm glad I was low on gas! I left work tonight and went to the gas station instead of getting right on to the freeway like I usually do and on the way out of the gas station I heard this strange noise so I pull over a couple of blocks away and crawled under and saw that my carrier bearing housing, not the bearing itself but the metal bracket that holds it had broken loose from the frame cross beam.

If I had hit the freeway it would have been bad!

anybody ever had a drive shaft come apart at high speeds?

I was at the dragstrip one time & saw a driveshaft break. It dug in at the front & "pole vaulted" (close eyes & use your imagination here) the rearend of the Nova up & did all kinds of nastyness. Keep your u-joints & carrier bearing in tip-top shape!

My friend's truck did the same thing. Front u-joint gave up on its end of the deal and the drive shaft starting plowing for corn. The rear bucked a bit. Luckily it didn't tear anything up. We just took it out and threw it in four wheel and went on our marry way. I didn't climb under there to look, but it had a slip yoke. It tried to commit suicide a little ways down the road, so we had to stop to get it, and then hurry back home before all the lube drained out. Stinkin slip yokes!

wow, close call. I've seen a drive shaft come out before. just swung around alot but if it broke off who knows what could of happen to the truck and other drivers.

I know how you feel I had the exact same thing happen on my 69 the carrier bearing let loose and beat the daylights out of the frame bent the drive shaft and broke the transmission case, good thing it was still the factory three sp

A friend of mine had his front driveshaft come off on the highway on his 79 f150. It flopped around and damaged the oil pan and brake lines. Since it was lifted it would not make it to the road. He had a tree fall on the truck during Isabel I believe it was a total lost.

Someone had locked his hubs in a mall parking lot, he had felt a vibration but kept on going and bam!

One good reason to get a one piece shaft, it would just drop to the frame cross member if it broke.

i had that break on my truck twice, broke the band around the carrier bearing not the bearing. never even made much noise though, just layed in the frame till i noticed it. one piece now.

I had my carrierbearing bracket break too! Did yours make a strange "clicking" type noise too? I drove for a while wondering if my brakes were hanging up, until i noticed when i got home that it was barely hanging there. I also had a U-Joint cap fall off while i was in town, scared the crap outta me!

it didn't make any noise until it came completely loose and then bang bang bang! I took it to a friend of mine who welded it back with some supports, all good now.
