Re: Bearings, King Pins, and Master Cylinders Oh My.....

Divine- I started looking around Rock Auto and about 30 google searches later, stumbled across a Raybestos #530-1065.010. It is a .010 oversized. Rock Auto lists it for the 55-57 second series trucks, but then it isn't listed for 58-89. I went ahead and ordered it anyways hoping my logic is correct. We'll see come Tuesday or Wednesday.

I think your hunch will prove to be a good one. It is my opinion that on mechanical parts the 55-57 and 58-59 are essentially the same. There may be some differences, but they should interchange. I would make the same gamble if I was in your position.

Re: Bearings, King Pins, and Master Cylinders Oh My.....

Gator,
I bit the bullet and got the complete kit from CPP. It was delivered yesterday and I spent some time last night going thru the boxes and instruction sheets, nuts & bolts, etc...

Got the old king pins removed yesterday after work, gotta do some cleaning & painting for sure! I have a spare axle and set of spindles in case something gets jacked up.

Looks like the CPP kit is pretty well put together. I will mock up then tear down for paint over the next few weekends.

LDO-
Always good to hear from you. Next time I'm in Pensacola visiting my buddy I'm definitely going to give you a call. Let me know if you need any information on king pins. I now know WWWAAAYYYY more than I ever thought I would.

What kind of paint are you using for your axle and everything?

I found out the CPP kit doesn't work for stock wheels so I am back to the drawing board on the disc brake thing for now. Don't want to foot the bill for wheels right now.

Look around on trailer websites. Many trailers have disc brake with 6 lug wheels and bolt pattern matches our trucks. Used trailer wheels might be found on C-list, etc for short money.

Re: Bearings, King Pins, and Master Cylinders Oh My.....

Turns out, no one in the US has any oversized pins in stock for a second series... I mean, no one...
Anyone have any other thoughts? I think I may just need to get the thing sleeved.

You've checked all the usual sources? Classic Industries shows a 30399 at .010 over.

Do you happen to have part nos for TRW or others? I sometimes have good luck.

I'm not sure what TRW is...

I don't know why Classic Industries lists 47-55, and 57-58 but no 56 or 59... That doesn't make much sense to me considering they all look the same. Only thing is that it looks like those use roller bearings and mine uses thrust washers. It would get me the pin I need though.

For what it's worth, in the '59 shop manual the Frame and Suspension section is listed as "no change." The previous manual was '55. I'm guessing it is the same part?

Re: Bearings, King Pins, and Master Cylinders Oh My.....

Classic lists a bunch of part numbers for similar applications. My hunch is they're reselling several different brands of part and they're just using the description provided by the manufacturer.

TRW is a major manufacturer of suspension parts owned by Federal Mogul corporation. Moog is another. McQuay Norris is another brand. Raybestos is the brand name applied to the former Spicer aftermarket parts line. There are probably plenty more but I'm drawing blanks right now. Carquest and Napa have used various manufacturers such as these over the years but they will have the parts put in their own house brand boxes. These chains sometimes have NOS parts still around with active part numbers if you can find them. So a TRW or Moog number might cross to a Napa or other number available from someone else.

Edit:

Original GM number for .010 OS is 3720692. Google search shows

55-56 3720692 1/2 Ton (.010 oversize)..............................39.95 kit

Re: Bearings, King Pins, and Master Cylinders Oh My.....

1project- Thanks for all that info. I really appreciate it. I just ordered a few kits in from different years and from different places. Oldmusclecars was at least two weeks out. Moog apparently doesn't sell an oversize kit (I talked with Federal Mogul tech the other day).
I got the kit in for an older truck from RockAuto today and the pins are the right size. It came with ball bearings instead of a thrust washer. I am waiting for a kit from Classic Industries, but they are not being so nice with their customer service. Apparently if you pay for a rush fee (guaranteed 2 day delivery) and then use paypal, the paypal part adds a day for processing (CSR neglected to tell me that). I am currently waiting on a phone call back from them... This is my first experience with them and hopefully it will improve.

How did it turn out? I think I'm in the same boat with needed oversized kingpins.

Then there is the not so fun option of having some made if need be. If I have to do it in the future I'll list the material spec and hardness.
