Re: HO52 to 14 bolt

Let me stand corrected, if you have an automatic and are looking at saving a few bucks then you might not need to spend the money on calipers with the integral parking brake, however unless you are just using the truck to go to the grocery store I would not recommend it.

Unfortunately there is no locker in my old unit. However, I am willing to let it go for a few hundred. If you find a locker that will bolt right in then it might be a goo opportunity to rebuild what is on the ground then just swap it in.

Re: HO52 to 14 bolt

Possibly. Lot of them have a check valve in the port for the rear circuit. Usually if you pull the line there is a separate piece in there (cone) that the line seals to, pull that and the check valve would be behind that. There are some that have the check valve in the prop valve.

Re: HO52 to 14 bolt

A disc/drum master cylinder might have enough fluid volume for rear disc brakes but I'd make sure first. But if you change the fronts you will need to install a disc/drum master cylinder and prop valve. With rear discs you will need an adjustable prop. valve to keep from locking the rears. In any event a brake booster is needed too.

Re: HO52 to 14 bolt

is there a disk brake conversion for the front of this truck? seems ive looked everywhere and cant find anything for a 20. might just stick with the drums, dont really need the stopping power or spend money on something like that

Re: HO52 to 14 bolt

72's had disc brakes. Probably the 73 and later may well fit also.

Re: HO52 to 14 bolt

so back to my question. should i buy a complete new axle and swap it (dana 60, or 14 bolt), look for a locker for my eaton, or use a 14 bolt detroit and 14 bolt axles. i see several 14 bolts on ebay with the g80 locker option, could i buy this then swap the lockers over? what version of the 14 bolt should i look for? full float, semi float, 9.5, 10.5????? not an expert on these axles

Re: HO52 to 14 bolt

Just saw this on craiglist http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/pts/3743089377.html
not sure how much is different between the single and dual axle configurations. I have yet to change my prop valve. My rear tires do not lock, i stop on a dime. Someday i will change it to get a shiney part. Check out this thread for additional width inforamtion http://www.planet4x4.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7413 another thing would be difference in the wheel studs.

Re: HO52 to 14 bolt

To clarify: When doing a full disc/disc conversion you should use an adjustable prop valve to balance the system. If you do not use a valve at all or use the drum distribution block the rear brakes can lock up first depending on caliper sizing and pad choice. If you use a stock disc/drum prop valve, the pressure reducing feature of the prop valve limits the effectiveness and application rate of rear discs.

Everthing can be done with stock Chevy parts to change your truck over to factory front disc brakes. This keeps everything simple and servicable anywhere. Spindles, rotors, steering linkage, master cylinder and prop valve are the prime parts. Might need wheels too depending on your current set up.

Read and plan.
