Switch location problem
I'm installing my power window kit. The motors went in great. The switches ... That's a different problem.
I need to know how to mount the switches and where to route the wires. If I cut a hole in the interior door sheet metal and run the wires inside the door how do I connect the switch when the switch is mounted to the upholstery panel ? Or should I run the wires between the sheet metal and the upholstery panel ? This is in a 1949 Chevy 3100. Pictures or diagrams would be great. Thanks for the help Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Switch location problem
Then I guess this thread is worthless. I'm technically challenged when it comes to posting pictures.

Re: Switch location problem
since i don't know what kind of switch's you are using i'll show you what i did.. i used the kind of switch that you use a stock door handle on.. i did have to cut the door to let the switch sit back a little so there wouldn't be a big bump on the door panel when it was installed.. i did run the wires on the inside of the door but you have to hold them down someway so they will not get cut by the window moving up and down..
Now not knowing how your's look or fit i can't tell you if you need to cut the door or not.. what was the name of the window kit you used and that may help someone know about this than me.. most after market kits come with the black rocker type switch's..

Re: Switch location problem
Ok sorry for the lack of info. It's a specialty window kit with their gm style lever switches
I'm trying to figure out if its easier to run the wires between the sheet metal face of the door and the upholstery panel or inside the door. I've seen some rigs on here that have the same style switches Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Switch location problem
Nothing sez the switches have to mount on the doors.
You could mount them in the center of the dash. That would allow you to operate the passenger window and visa versa, and lessen the wiring.

Re: Switch location problem
I thought about that. The problem is I couldn't find a toggle switch that was momentary on up and down. If any one has ideas I'm open.

Re: Switch location problem
I was thinking use the double GM switch you have and cut a hole in the dash for it.

Re: Switch location problem
a regular toggle switch won't work, even a momentary dpdt doesn't have the functions you need.
window switches have a reversing function built in them, 3 wires in, 2 out if you have 2 switches they mount in a console, so you can roll the passenger window up/down 3 are required for door mounting, 2 in the drivers door and one in the pass door with 3 switches the wiring gets a little more complicated especialy getting all the wires in the door looms here is a link to specialties wiring diagram for 2 switches i mounted truk's switches in a console

Re: Switch location problem
Look aroud on the internet....there are several companies making switch kits. I do not remember what the company was that I used in Big Berhta. I have a 4 switch pod mounted in the center console. The rear doors do have a switch on each so I can control them or the person in the back can.

Re: Switch location problem
I've got the switch kit from specialty power windows. It has two switches for the drivers door and one for the passenger door plus all the wire.
If I mount the switches to the finish upholstery panel ithe back of the switch with the plug fastened on does not clear the interior sheet metal panel on the door. If I mount the switch to the sheet metal how do I access the switch thru the upolstry panel? If I mount the switch to the upholstery panel and route the wires up from the motor inside the door there is no way to plug into the back of the switch and still mount the upolstry panel. I've seen pictures on here of these switches mounted on an upolstry panel so someone has figured out how to do it. Please help. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Switch location problem
usually the switches are mounted in the panel and the wiring is long enough to plug/unplug once you undo the panel
hiding wires behind a stock trim panel may make it hard to run wires you could look at making an arm rest to mount them in

Re: Switch location problem
Ok maybe I'm just not seeing the big picture here. I mount the switch to the upolstry panel. Got that. Then do I cut a big hole in the door panel so the plug has a space to fit into and run the wires down inside the door? Or do I route the wires down between the upolstry and the the door skin ? It seems like if I run the wires up inside the door and plug in the switch I won't be able to have enough wire length to remove the upolstry panel when I need to.
