How much trans fluid?

I have a 86swb with a 700R4. I am going to replace the trans filter and need to know how much fluid is needed to refill it. It has a stock pan. I was also wondering if any fluid works or should I get a specific type? How about the B&M Trick Shift, any one use it yet?

about 5-6 quarts... and you should use DEXRON III. Been told(GM DEALER) you can use DEX VI , but I use DEX III. Most GM vehicles after 2005 require DEX VI

Re: How much trans fluid?

B&M Trick Shift is a "fancy" Type F ATF. Type F is a Old fluid spec for Fords, It makes Hydra-Matic transmissions shift firmer because of the lack of friction modifiers, Type F also lacks the anti-foaming agents & detergents of Dexron ATF.

Mobil 1 ATF is rated at or above Dexron IIIH specs, Good ATF

TES-295 spec ATF is the Best Dexron III available.

The ONLY transmissions that require Dexron VI are "5LxxE" & "6LxxE" transmissions.

Re: How much trans fluid?

5 qts on a pan drop only. May need a bit more after pulling the filter and loosing whats in the pump so 5-6 is the correct answer.
Good additive would be lube-guard. Prior to the endangered species act, trans fluid had sperm whale oil in it which aided in fluid life and cooler temperatures. Lube-Guard mimics the sperm whale oil. I have never believed in "snake oil" additives but, 10 years ago when I was doing transmissions my wholesale supplier told me about this stuff. Bought a bottle and the next day I drove the truck to work, got underneath and put my hand on the pan and typical for 700's it was.........HOT! Added the Lube-Guard and drove home that night, put my hand on the pan and........not too bad. That convinced me. Been using it ever since....

Re: How much trans fluid?

My cousin has been building transmissions for 30 years, and he just told me about Lube-guard last week..He says that they add 2 bottles to every Ford that they rebuild.
He told me to get the one for sticky valves, When my tranny is cold the first shift is extremely hard.
What is the total amount of fluid? I believe you have to add one ounce of Lube-Guard for every ounce of fluid.
