68 c 10

My C 10 HAD a 327 from the factory with a 350 trans. Does anybody know what gears are in the rear end? I could take off the 12 bolt cover but would rather not just now. I think it has a 273 because I turned the driveshaft until the wheel went completely around one time. I am putting in a 383 stroker with a 700 R 4 and really do not want to fry the new tranny.

jack up one rear wheel and mark a line on the wheel and put a line on the drive shaft, tape will work also. then turn the tire around two times and see how many times the drive shaft turns. if the drive shaft moves like 3/4 of a turn it will be a 3.73...this will be close...its been a while sence i have done this and i think thats the way to gage it...unless you have a possi track..

Re: 68 c 10

Well a 327/TH350 would not be a stock 68 C10 combo. but a 327 would have had 3.73 gears with a Powerglide or 3.07 with a TH400.

As always checking your gears by a physical tooth count is the best way and a good opportunity to change the often neglected gear oil.

X2 for Tim's advice-----that plus you get to check out the condition of things inside-----not all that uncommon to find a surprise or two.....

I agree with Tim.It makes sense to take care of the maintainence issues whenever opportunity presents. This is especially true when adding power.
