Re: What is this actually called???
That is the "tie-rod". You should be able to get that at nearly any auto parts store.

Thats the part. But, both my tie rods are screwed on to it, its an 86. My 78 has the passenger side made into the bar.

Re: What is this actually called???
Then how about an adjusting tube? Some of the 4x4's, the left tie-rod is really long.

Re: What is this actually called???
I have always heard it called the steering link and the drag link is the one that attaches to the pitman arm.

Re: What is this actually called???
The left tie rod is longer than the right and the left one has a hole in it for the stock stabilizer. It has a nut attached to each side and the tie rods screw into it. Went to get an alignment today and its bent.

Re: What is this actually called???
The entire thing from one knuckle to the other is the "tie-rod". The style just depends upon the year of the truck. The earlier models had; one long rod, one short "end", and the adjuster sleeve with clamps.
The later ones had 2 short ends and the center section was the adjusting sleeve. IIRC, they had jamb nuts on the ends? This made it so that the main rod itself was not a wear-out item, it would only be replaced in the event of damage.

Re: What is this actually called???
lmc says the one I need is for a truck with 4.10 rear gears and w/o 13" rear brakes. my truck came with 3.42 gears, so someone has changed it I guess

Re: What is this actually called???
No silly, Its calling out 9 as a "D". That says, without 13" brakes and 4.10. As in without either of those items. Notice that "C" is with 13" brakes and 4.10's. Your tierods/adjuster tube is original.

I looked on advance autos site and o'reillys site but they don't carry them. I assume LMC is the only carrier

Re: What is this actually called???
Sources may be a bit more limited, like I said, because that is not a wear-out item. You only need to replace it if it gets damaged (bent), normally you just need the ends.

Re: What is this actually called???
Any auto parts place should have these, I know off road design has some nice beefy ones. I wouldnt buy the lmc ones, I did and they are overpriced junk imo.

Re: What is this actually called???
I just replaced items 4-6,10-12 & 17-19 on my '90 3/4ton suburban. While using the pickle fork to seperate the right side tie rod end from the knuckle the socket fell off of shoulder pin. AND I HAD JUST DRIVEN IT BACK FROM WASILLA, AK. 65 MILES AWAY!!!!
