New Door Speaker Question

This past weekend I bought two new door speakers (Polk DXI690). They are mounted below the door panel towards the inside of the door.

When I wash the truck, an incredible amount of water gets inside the door and thus, soaking the speakers, wires etc.

Are there any options of protecting the speakers?

New window rail wipes, and new window channel seals. Other than that... putting speakers in the doors of an old vehicles is just asking for the speakers to get wet.

You're going to get water inside the doors no matter what you do. One thing you can do to protect them is cut an antifreeze jug (or similar) just a little deeper than the dept of the door, that way you can wedge them in later. line the jugs with some foam rubber or pillow stuffing, this will really make them sound much better. Once that's done you can fold the jug up a little to get in the door then slide it over the speaker hole. Since most if not all the water that leaks in the door runs down the inside of the outer panel this will protect the driver from the back. I did this in my 72 for my midrange drives and it sounds much better and they're still dry after several years.

You can get a similar product at Crutchfield.com as well.
I've used them several times. Reasonably priced, and they do improve sound quality as well.

Back in the day, we would bring the wire in from the bottom and wrap a piece of plastic vapor-barrier sheet around the speaker before we put it in the door. It works pretty well. But now you can get marine grade speakers that are nice thanks to the wakeboard crowd. That is what I would do. You aren't cutting up nice doors to add speakers are you?

Thanks Guys! That's exactly what I was looking for.

It looks like Boom Mats come in 3.5" deep and 4.5" deep. The 3.5" will just barely clear my speakers (which is fine), but I'm thinking I will buy the 4.5" as long as it's not too deep for the door and will not interfere with any of the door internals.

The problem is, I won't be able to able to measure the inside of my doors until this weekend, but I don't think I will have a problem with the 4.5".

I was looking at Marine speakers and none were attractive to me, most were white with a goofy looking grill.

And after reading your statement, I read the fine print on my speakers:

"Marine Certified means the DXi690 is built tough to withstand the harshest environments on the water."

This is really cool! I think I may try the Boom Mat for piece of mind. Thanks for the information! I had no idea, I guess I got lucky, lol.

Oh no, I'm not cutting anything additional. My Dad cut holes in the doors some 20 years ago...so I'm kind of just working with what I have. If it were up to me, I'd look into my options that didn't require body modifications.

You don't have to use that grille, you can use another the same size that looks better.

We used to use round tuppaware containers siliconed in behind the speaker.

The Boom Mats have been ordered, I bought the 4.5" deep ones.

We'll see how they work out, I imagine I will have to trim around the edges, hopefully they will cut easily.

A quick update.

I'm not sure what 6x9's these things were designed around but they were WAY to big for my 6x9's. After reading reviews online, they say to buy a smaller size than your actual speaker...I guess I am going to return these and buy 6x8 Boom Mats.

12 years ago i installed some of those baffles with my 6x9's. I just replaced my speakers last weekend and ended up reusing the baffles since they were still in great shape. the old speaker looked like new after all those years.
