Engine temp sending unit wire

The heat shield around the wire that runs across the top of the valve covers is pretty much shot and crumbling on my '70 C10 350. Anyone know what I can use as a replacement.

Re: Engine temp sending unit wire

The cover is available from multiple vendors. Best to replace with correct materials. You can use plastic loom but it will deteriorate faster.

Re: Engine temp sending unit wire

I just covered it up with some split loom and it seems to be holding up ok. It doesn't get too much heat so it hasn't been a problem.

I'm in Canada so I'm not sure where you can pick it up - likely an auto parts store or electrical supply.

Re: Engine temp sending unit wire

The original place for the temp sending unit is in the drivers side cylinder head. Then it doesn't have to lay on the top of the engine or valve covers.

Re: Engine temp sending unit wire

I actually had one in each cylinder head. When I installed the crate engine I maintained both of them. The drivers side one comes up from the head, across the front of the valve cover, then along the edge if the intake manifold/valve cover to the rear if the engine.

Re: Engine temp sending unit wire

Then you spliced the wires together from both sending units?

Seems like overkill to me... not to mention you could clean up the engine compartment without all the extra wire...

Re: Engine temp sending unit wire

the wire and loom on my engine runs from the sending unit in the block up along the top of the valve cover and under 2 small steel tabs welded onto the cover then back through the fire wall. I'll try the split loom and see how it holds up. Thanks

Re: Engine temp sending unit wire

I didn't do any splicing - it came this way from the factory so I wanted to maintain both when I swapped the engine. It really doesn't look messy.

Re: Engine temp sending unit wire

I bought about 3 feet of it from orilleys a few months ago. They do carry the exact heat cloth loom you are looking for.

Re: Engine temp sending unit wire

Look in the "Help" section of a parts store. If they don't stock it, they can get it.
