fan set up
I'm kinda new so forgive me if this has been covered already. I'd like see
some electric fan set-ups on '60-'63 models. I currently have a Griffin 2 row (1.5 inch tubes) radiator with an aluminum shroud and 16 inch fan. It does ok but my temps get a little uncomfortably high in bumper to bumper traffic and 90 degree weather. I'm considering a dual 10 inch fan set-up or a better quality 16 inch fan but not sure yet. My pickup has a 383/700r4 with an external trans cooler. Any thoughts, suggestions or input appreciated. |

Re: fan set up
Here's my 16" fan, just finished it. Still have to bundle the wires. I have a temp probe that goes into the radiator. My thermostat is 190 and the probe activates at 180 or when the a/c is on. My problem is that the temp gauge goes to 215 then the thermostat opens and the temp goes down to 170, then when it heats up to 200 the probe turns the fan on and the temp stays at 190. I can tell you that the 215 temp makes me ready to shut it off and head for the side of the road.
Mine is a 64 with a 350/700r.

Re: fan set up
The al radiator and fan came as a package from Atomic radiators (Champion) in Oregon. I paid about $229.00 for the Pro Series 3 row al, and the fan. 16", 2500 cfm.

Re: fan set up
Here's what I did. I used a fan from a 98 Lincoln Mark VIII. I picked it up at the wrecking yard for $15.00 (I'm cheap and waited for 1/2 off day to buy it) I only had to trim it a little to make it fit my stock radiator. While there I also picked up a 2 speed fan relay from a 98 Vovlo which makes for a very easy installation. One hot in, two hots out for the fan but I'm only using one hot out since my fan is a single speed and there's two grounds out, again I'm only using one since the fan is single speed. I'm using a Derale 16730 fan controler ($31.00 from Summit) to complete the ground when temperature hits 180 deg. I bent up some stainless sheet I pulled out of the scrap pile at my work but you could use thin 2" angle iron to make your mounting brackets. Oh, and to test your fan before you buy it use the battery out of your cordless drill. With the fan, Volvo relay & Derale controler I'm out less than $40.00 total.

Re: fan set up
How long have you been running the Lincoln
Fan? I've doing some checking into those too but wasn't sure if my 100 amp alternator would be able to handle it. I also read that certain Ford Taurus fans really move the air.. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: fan set up
Actually I haven't got it installed in the truck yet. I pulled the motor & trans to install my disc front suspension and fix a rear main seal leak. I also picked up a Taurus fan set up that same day that I picked up the Lincoln fan but the Lincoln fan is a better fit for our trucks. If you like I can set the Taurus on top of my radiator, take a pic and post it so you can see the difference. I test ran the Lincoln fan using a couple of cheap 18 gauge test leads and it pulled 32 amps. with the proper 10 gauge wire it should pull less amps.

Re: fan set up
what do you have for a temp guage? where is you temp sending unit located?. you are more than likely running a 15lb rad cap so actually 215 F is not really a problem. this is why they installed idiot lights in vehicles so that they wouldn't fret over their temps or a guage that had C-normal-H on them as at 215f it would be in the normal range

Re: fan set up
I have full set of Dolphin gauges and the sending unit is located
in the block. In heavy traffic, if my temp gets to 215, the engine will run like crap and shut down...gotta keep it cool..Summers in Mississippi are no joke..my 383 doesn't particularly care for 200 + degrees.. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: fan set up
Pictures of mine are here .. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=4884684 Don't use a cheap fan , like a pro comp ... they are junk , factory fans use way less power.. the cheap junk one quit on me in the middle of the Woodward Dreamcruise...
now I have a factory one off a citation zip strapped through the radiator and it works fine ,may not be perfect in 90 + heat ,but it only covers 2/3 of the radiator... |
