EGE valve making noise

hello all, hearing a slight " kuh-schinc" sound that i hear intermittently. Asked a buddy at an exhaust shop and he said its coming from the EGE valve assembly. Looked at my hayes manual and got an idea of what im hearing, thinking the valve flap is getting stuck either open or closed, any one here confirm that or have a similar problem? Not sure if its effecting performance, doesnt even sound too serious just bugs the heck out of me. was told i could wire the valve open, what do you guys think?

Re: EGE valve making noise

I think you mean the efe valve? Exhaust fume efficiency or something like that. Is the vacuum line still run to it and does it open and close freely? You can try moving the arm back and forth with your hands.

Nope - early fuel evaporation valve (EFE) was used during 70's into early 80's to restrict exhaust flow from a passenger side head when engine coolant was below a set temperature (TVS valve). The restriction forced exhaust gases to flow through intake crossover passage to the driver side and in the process warming up intake manifold quickly. I have nothing but four letter expletives for who ever came up with this system, but this is what GM had to do meet EPA mandates!

It is common for a flapper to get loose on the shaft - it was press fit, spot welded. Very common for it make rattling noises as gets old and rusty.

Check actuating vacuum canister - it should maintain vacuum while pulling rod in.

Re: EGE valve making noise

perfect!! thanks for the info guys, so from what i gather it basically helps with cold starts and warming up the truck faster?? anyways I think I am going to go ahead and remove it, dont like the look of the actuator assembly anyways, will removing it be pretty straight forward? just remove the actuating assembly and the flapper then plug the vacuum line that goes to the actuator right?? Thanks!

Re: EGE valve making noise

Exhaust studs "may" be too long if you remove it, If I ever dug that deep headers were going on. Over the years, many have been wired opened and left.

Re: EGE valve making noise

Finally found some time to remove the efe today, when removing the power actuator will I need to plug the line that goes into it or throw a breather on it?? thanks! Plan on removing the power actuator and actuating rod then wiring the valve assembly open, anything im missing?

Re: EGE valve making noise

I don't remember where the vacuum line comes from, but it may have to be capped on the carb or switch side. Shouldn't need anything down on the exhaust manifold.

Re: EGE valve making noise

yes cap it off at the carb
i'd check/feel/squeeze the other large hoses going to the base of the carb,i found mine dried/cracked split open,causing vac leaks
i used shorter studs

RF - You don't happen to have a part number for the TVS do you? It's hit and miss @ Napa...they have a half dozen to choose from and my old one is too thrashed to take in to compare.

Re: EGE valve making noise

JC

Good question on TVS!! I hated EFE system 30 years ago and I still hated today. On the TVS - that part (for '84 305 with CA emissions) was long discontinued by GM, OE# 3053249.
http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=59362

The main difference between most of these valves is actuation temperature - i.e when EFE valve is allowed to be fully open. Since the smog check is conducted on a fully warmed up engine - the temperature delta's between various part numbers are moot.

There are couple close functional equivalent made by SMP, part number: PVS48 which crosses to OE #14007803, 21272, 3043015 for use in C10 (1979 - 1984)

Thread Size - NPT: 1/2" - 14
Number of Ports: 2;
Number of Hose Connectors: 2;
Hose Size - Inches: 3/16" x 3/16"
Ported Vacuum Switch

Also SMP PVS116 is a better match for use in C10 (1983 - 1986) which crosses to OE #212106, 3053249

Thread Size - NPT: 1/2" - 14
Number of Ports: 2
Number of Hose Connectors: 2
Ported Vacuum Switch
