Full Wheel Covers ???

I am interested in some information on the full wheel covers that Chevy/GMC used on the 71/72 year trucks. I know that the same basic wheel cover continued into the 73 + year trucks but not sure about the changes. I recently bought some used covers and found that one of the covers has a plastic center cap and the other 3 have a pot metal type center cap. From 20 feet, they all look the same.

As far as the cover itself the one with the plastic center cap also has a hole behind it and I thing that was made for a 4 wheel drive but they used them for rear covers as well.

Does anyone have any knowledge of these wheel covers? I would love to learn more about what the differences are and how to make sure I get what I need.

Wow those are nice wheel covers. I believe those are 73 and up because of the center cap. I believe that the center cap changes to plastic in 73. Not only is the cap color yellow, it is slightly different in design so just painting them blue will not make them correct for a 72 and prior.

I am learning as I go here. I would like actual confirmation for what I think.

I have almost 3 sets of those covers.

ALL of them have the yellow color on the caps.

One set came with my truck, the others I bought from someone who had a pile of 72 parts.

When looking at the factory literature for both 71 and 72, the cover trucks had these caps on them. Couldn't make out the color on the center.

All of my centers are metal.

That is good to know and to be honest, I have never seen any that were blue. I do know there are metal and plastic centers and they are somewhat different in design but it is hard to notice. When I return home, I will take some photos of what I have and post them.

71/2 covers had blue detail, 73-75 had the yellow. Many just touch up the yellow with blue and call it a day. Great way to get fwc's if you need them. (pics courtesy of classic bowties great wheel cover and hubcap post)

Jocko has it nailed for the PO1 covers for 71-72 applications. However they did go back to 69 as well. The later square body style were yellow accented But I don't remember when they were finally dropped.
As a note, the PA1 wheelcovers were also avaiable on 72 C10 Fleetsides only. This is the same cover as was included in the package Highlanders (YG6-8). They don't seem to have sold many and I cannot recall a non-Highlander SPID with them. But then they were plain and a lot more expensive than the PO1s.

The yellow caps were on 73-75s. '76 was when the final hubcap design started. I'm not sure I've ever seen a plastic w/blue bowtie

I have not seen any plastic with blue either. All the ones I have are yellow/plastic and yellow/pot metal.

Really like the full wheel covers. Here is a set of wheel covers I pick up at a swap meet last year. When I saw them I thought someone had painted the outer area of the cover but I've been told these were option. Can anyone confirm?

You were correct. Those were painted and there was never an option for any variation.

I didn't care for the look but if it was factory I would have left them as is. Makes it an easy decisions now.

Upon closer inspection, it turns out I DO have the blue bowties on my original wheels. The yellow ones were purchased with a bunch of other parts from a 72.
