Project Barn Burner: '60 C10

Hey guys, newbie here looking for some tips & tricks with a build... I purchased a 1960 Chev 1/2 ton Short Box Step Side this past summer off an old farmer in the area. I've always had a soft spot for the "eyebrow" hood trucks. The truck isn't in the best of shape as the floor needs to be patched and some welding needed to be done to the rear fenders but I'm not worried about that as my goal is to build a "shop truck" style truck. My job is a week on week off type so I want to build a cheap, low budget, Do it yourself project.

The plans for the truck are to swap out the original straight 6 for a 350 with a 5 speed manual trans.

I'm looking for some tips and tricks on lowering the truck to a nice ride height without air bags. I'm all for swapping out the front end and rear end for a newer style. Is it as easy as cranking down then torsion bars and cutting the rear springs a bit?

Thank you in advance for the input and advice!!

Not sure about cranking torsion bars, but I've seen guys swap the whole front clip from a 73-87 to get disc brakes and coil springs. Basically a bolt in.

As for the 5 speed, depends on how you will drive it. T-5 is a popular swap, but they are weak and not for "spirited" driving. I went TKO600 and 383 sbc for the fun factor.

Welcome to the board!

Welcome aboard! We need pictures........

I went the route of 2.5 inch drop front disc brake kit. It worked out well and the kit I bought included new tie rods and ball joints. I am going to drop the back with either 4 or 5 inch drop springs. Should give a nice lowered stance.

Good luck. I also recommend the FAQs, they have helped me a lot.

I did the front disc conversion with a junk yard donor set up.
The next time I do it, it will be with a kit just like Da_Bears described.

Re: Project Barn Burner: '60 C10

Hey guys a little update! So I feel like an idiot, I purchased the truck sight unseen, went to pick it up and it's actually a GMC. The condition of the truck is actually a bit better then what I was told so I'm happy about that! I only have one picture right now but will be posting a lot more when I start my week off on Tuesday! Once I figure out how to post a photo I will!
