hanging doors

Picked up two new doors - any tricks to hanging these bad boys - I fiddle farted around out there for an hour and a half - it's close but not quite right and the OCD in me had to walk away from it. Any help greatly appreciated.

Re: hanging doors

I sit on rolling stool and measure lap elevation.
Jack vehicle till door seal elevation same as my lap.
Sit on stool.
Position door on lap.
roll over to vehicle.
I can use calf muscles to position door perfectly.
Hope this is clearer than mud; works pretty good.

Re: hanging doors

Heh.. I have an ocd issue also.. I have been fighting mine for sometime.. everyone has tips, tricks and of course the book outlines how..

I personally have found for me it was easiest to lock down the hinges to the body first.. getting my gaps as close as possible to acceptable..

Then I worried about the hinge to door and adjustment for body lines etc.. Since there is some bolt gap in the hinge there is a tiny amount of up down/left right adjustment with the hinge to door bolts but very little.. This is what has been frustrating me for sometime.. the very little movement I get when I lock these hinges into place upsets my gab lines ever so slightly..

I can come to the conclusion.. These bad boys were no where near perfect off the line, they were slammed on and moved forward..

Line em up.. If they look good and latch consider yourself blessed I still cannot get mine to latch correctly..

Bingo. The factory gaps on these things were pretty terrible. Unless you're ready to jump into a repaint, just line them up the best you can.

Re: hanging doors

Once you get the hinges aligned perfectly, drill an 1/8 hole through them and use either a 1/8" drill bit or cleco to align the next time.

Re: hanging doors

these are great ideas - putting them on to make sure everything is lined up but want to pull them back off to prime everything - so drilling the hole makes a whole lot of sense

Re: hanging doors

Wooden paint stir sticks are the correct gap, this what I have used on numerous camaros it matches factory gaps..!
