Re: rust remover
Besides a grinder with a wire wheel? Well, there are a few of them out there, but you have to go over the area with a wire brush to get the scale off with all of them, I think. I have used Plastikote rust converter and it works pretty well, I'm happy with it. I know POR 15 works great, but don't know if that's what you're looking for.
Maybe a little more info?

Re: rust remover
For smaller items, I soak them overnight in white vinegar, then wire brish them and rinse well with water. Not for cast aluminum or weaker metals, since the vinegar will eat away at the metal. Make sure that you rinse the part well afterwards, and immediately dry the part. If you don't you will get flash rush on cast iron and you will spend a lot of time removing the rust before you can primer.

Re: rust remover
I have heard that CLR, water and an SOS pad works good.

Re: rust remover
I use PPG metal conditioner and it goes a looong way. I may try vinegar when I finish the PPG.
I prefer to hit the pits w/ media blaster but I have used welders wire wheel on a grinder. I also use scotch brite w/ metal conditioner. If you have a big job then consider controlling dust w/ water mist spray. After cleaning the pits I wash w/ dish soap, rinse, dry, wax & grease remover (if needed), dry, PPG metal conditioner, rinse, dry. Then apply epoxy primer ASAP. |

Re: rust remover
Been doing this kind of thing for a long time.Vinegar is new to me.I use Krud Kutter from Lowe's and other places.Priced equitably with commercial (auto body) type phosphoric acid based rust "converters". Yes,get any hard scale off and then use the acid etch solution. When it has worked and then been rinsed off with fresh water you can let it dry and then Acid Etch primer for a very good base . I skip the acid etch and come back with POR 15.This is super good substrate and you can acid etch primer over cured to tie coat it to your color basecoats. Not cheap but will provide many years of protection. Will be posting pics of my 64' Fleet here shortly and you will be able to see the process.

Re: rust remover
epoxy seals out all air and moisture permanently, por 15 does not.

Re: rust remover
I epoxy primed wheel wells of one car back in the 90's. My logic was, it would be easy to touch up if needed. Granted, I don't cruise around on salty roads. Been in the rain a number of times over the years. The epoxy primer has held up perfectly.
