Anyone change the "wind chase" in your doors? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Both of my doors need the "wind chase" repaired. The passenger door is missing completely and the driver door is missing one of the pads that pinch together to stop the door from opening too far. Does anyone make these? Has anyone ever swapped them? I sure don't want to have to change the complete hinge.

What's a wind chase?

You may want to post a pic of what you need and/or look at the LMC catalog since they have good illustrations and post the page and item number.

I made my own dohicky to keep my drivers door from opening too far. Sorry I don't have any pics. I roughly cut the shape out on some scrap I had then guessed how long the pin needed to be to catch the door... drilled a hole in the pin, added a cotter pin to hold the pin at the right height inside the door and it works. It doesn't look pretty but I'm the only one that sees it. The door is creased already anyway.

I think you're talking about the mechanism in the hinge that holds the doors open? If yes, then I've seen the pads referred to as "friction pads" but I don't think anyone makes a replacement kit.

I know some guys have cut up old brake pad material and used that to replace the pads, so you might try that to replace your one missing pad. Do a search here on the forum for "friction pad" and you should find the threads.

For the one hinge that's missing everything, I think your only choice is to buy a replacement hinge, either new or used.

The wind "check" (not chase) is built into the hinge. It is not an independant unit like a van door, so it is not likely to be rebuildable. It is part of the hinge "assembly"

Got it. This part has a lot of different names -Door check, door hinge stops, door catch, door friction stops or pads.

Some one posted that Classic Parts has a repair kit. Might need to call the vendor and check with them since everyone uses a different name for the part.

Classic Parts used to sell the friction pads for the door detent. They no longer do, but I believe there is a replacement procedure outlined in FAQ.

Are you talking about the parts that are mounted in the front pillar and squeezeies the lever that comes off the hinge. I looked through the LMC up dated spring edition 2013 and did not find that part. I know I seen them parts somewhere, they're made with a teflon on plates.If this is the part you are talking about.

Found this in the FAQ section, but the parts are no loger sold. I guess I am going to have to put upper hinges on both doors.

I guess either not enough demand or they want to sell the whole door hinge asm. If my door hinges were in good shape I think I'd try to find some way to repair those door detent pads.

You should ask in the classified section if anyone has a used hinge that you could buy. Then use the parts to fix yours.

I actually have 2 full set of extra hinges, the problem I am having is removing the roll pin. I can't get it out of the hinges. I did get the one out of my passenger door, but it was destroyed when I was finished.
