questions for a engine swap
Hey guys need some info on a engine swap I have in mind I currently have a i6 and 3speed tranny in my 70 she seems to be tired and is starting to get a slight knock and that's said I'm planning to pick up a 305 with a th350 for the truck and I'm wonder what upgrades are needed to fit this engine in my truck besides the automatic tranny cross member and steering column

Re: questions for a engine swap
If you are going to the trouble of upgrading the driveline upgrade to a 350 with a TH350. Or better a new crate motor with a warranty, shipped they are under 2k. If you are wanting to use a motor because you "have it" think long and hard about its condition and installed longevity.

Re: questions for a engine swap
305, pfft. Why bother. Just go buy an ls9 for $30,000 and have chip foose install it for you. I can't believe anybody would even think of using a good running small block less than 350 cubic inches, that's just insanity!

Re: questions for a engine swap
Don't waste your time with the 305. Not a very good motor. Just go with a 350. There are an unlimited amounts of parts for the 350 and its a much better motor. Good luck

Re: questions for a engine swap
you will need small block engine towers and engine mounts
you will also need the linkage that mounts on the frame that is connected to the automatic steering column and the tranny i believe you will need driveshaft work i think it needs to b shortened you might b better off with a new radiator that has tranny cooler and fan shroud too the 305 wiull b a slight upgrade from the 6cyl// but not as snobby as some guys who want to spend your money want// if it is lo milage and lolopriced it will get you around for quite awhile

Re: questions for a engine swap
When I started my project, I initialy considered a 4.3 v6, decided agaisnt that and considered a 305----
The 4.3 would have been down a little on power (not looking for a ground pounder--just cruising). I ended up using a 350--not only because of parts availability but for the increased torgue that comes with cubic inches (I even went with a lower rpm-higher torque cam). I am going to run a muncie 4 speed (car) and a 3.08 posi. The additional torque will be good since Im using the 3.08's. Your idea of a 305 is very do able-----depending on your intended use.

Re: questions for a engine swap
First thing you need to do is set a budget on this engine swap. What can you do with your budget. Will the I6 live until you can save the money for what you want? I am not a fan of the 305 just like most others. I have used them before because it was all I had and no money to do better at the time. If you must use a 305 at least an upgrade to a 350 will be much easier in the future.
Also, I would consider finding another I6 and building it up. You will get better torque and horse power from a 292 than you ever would from a 305. By the way, I do brake inspections at Winco Foods (I-5 at exit 271) twice a year and maybe I can meet you and check out your 70 sometime while I am there. What ever you decide, make it fun, Tom |
