Losing Spark

Got my truck back together, and went to fire the engine. engine turns, no spark. At all, on any plug. change coil/cap/rotor, had spark for a minute, then its all gone. i dont get it. Engine ran fine before it came out, and now it wont even give me spark. anybody got any ideas? its a daily driver so i need it bad. thanx in advance

Is this distributor HEI or points? If its HEI your module might of died and that privents the spark.

double check your wiring, also if you've changed from points to hei you can't use the original wiring, GROUNDS

I know this sounds pretty basic.....But do you have a good power connection to the distributor? I once had the same problem and it turned out to be the ignition switch. Get a test light, put it to the hot wire to the distributor on the firewall bulkhead connector and have a helper turn the key. If no power, try replacing the ignition switch.

Not to hijack the thread but had the same thing last night. I have HEI. Just put a new cap and coil in 1 month before. Think I might have fried the module?

We really need to know what type of disty you have. Grab your self a digital multimeter and see where you are gettting power and where you are not. I don't thing it is a ground, there are just to many grounding points on a engine. Give it a try....

Dumb question, on an HEI, if its the module, do I need to replace the whole dizzy?

PaintPyro you can just replace the module. Usually 2 screws hold it in the dizzy.

I heard this, but I don't know for sure. Someone said if you hook a test light up between the tach terminal of an HEI & ground, that it will flash while cranking if the module is good. Anybody know if this is true or not?

Sounds like it should work with the test light. You should at least get some light out of it, but it might blow your light also. cause it flashes fast.

Hey i might be the new guy but this is definitely a subject i know about. If you got HEI which i gather you do I'd check to see if you got power going into the distributor first. You can do this by simply placing the ignition in the run position and swiping the end of the wire against a ground. Sparks should fly but if they don't you can either find the problem or run a new wire. If you run a new wire just find a keyed hot on the fuse panel, it's pretty simple. If you do get juice make sure if you got a tach wire it isn't touching it either when its plugged in. This will ground it out and you won't get anything. i doubt your coils bad. You can have your ignition module tested at any local parts store but i doubt thats your problem either. when they go bad you will be able to start the truck when its cold, but as soon as it heats up it will die and get no spark. The only other possible problem you could have is a bad pick up coil. It's located underneath the rotor and is hooked up to the vacuum advance canister. To get it out of there you will need to take the retaining pin out of the bottom of the shaft right under the gear. Then knock off the gear and the hole shaft will pull out. Then it's just a couple of bolts but just remember how you pulled it apart, and don't loose you little retaining pin. It's all pretty simple and you don't need any schnazzy tools to do it. One thing to add is make sure you are getting power to the distributor when the key is in the crank position AND the run position.I was having a similar problem (I had inadvertantly switched 2 wires) and my Distributor was getting power in the run position, but not during cranking. Hope this helps alittle.
