Exhaust

Hello, I have a quick question for everyone. I recently did Sanderson shorty headers with an h pipe and Spintech mufflers. I had ram horns with an h pipe and Flowmaster 40's. i chose Spintech thinking they would not drone like the Flowmasters, boy was i wrong, they drone about 10x worse and I don't even want to drive the truck because its an instant headache. Do you guys know of some mufflers that could be used on a daily driver? If they had no drone that would be great and the truck would still sound beefy when i put my foot into it? My truck is a 72 c10 SWB with a 350, aluminum heads, edelbrock intake, edelbrock carb, cam, Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Exhaust

I have long tube headers, H-pipe,and Flowmasters with the exhaust turned down at the bumper. I don't have any drone, Where do yours exit?

Re: Exhaust

The exit position is really important in my experience. If it's tucked under the body at all, I've gotten drone at low RPMs. Also how far back did you put your mufflers, any change there?

Dynamax Super Turbo's ! ! Flow well and still reasonably quiet. Ripped Flowmaster 40's from my '62 Bel-Air (468 ci BBC) and switched to the Dynamax. Loved being able to actually hear my CD's. Dynamax are made by Walker and can be ordered thru Advance Auto. (They will price-match any catalog, with no shipping).

Re: Exhaust

My flows exited behind the rear wheels with chrome tips and the spintechs are turndowns under my bed infront of the rear axles but it sounds like im driving with open headers. when i put the new muflers on its getting dumped behind the rear bumper. my voice, stereo, and exhaust all fight over each other.

Re: Exhaust

I agree, if you run the pipes all the way out it would sound a lot better. If you still dont like them, you can send those spintechs to me.

On another note, which mufflers did you use? I just put the truck/rv spintechs on my 98 cclb. Its a 454 with a supercharger, with headers, no cats, dual 3" all the way. Its very tame until you get on it, then it gets loud. Very manageable cruising around.

Re: Exhaust

I have a set of 2 1/2" magnaflows (sorry, dont know which numbers they are) on my 71. I don't really care for them. In my opinion they sound just like every other packed muffler.

Re: Exhaust

Sleeper, your experience is very similar to mine. Same headers, H pipe and had Flowmasters exit at bumper. Too much drone. Installed Spintechs and exited them at the side behind rear wheels. No drone at all, but was a bit too loud for this old guy. Now have Dynamax Super Turbo with the same exit behind the rear wheels. Perfect for me now.

Therefore, you may to keep the Spintechs but just change the exit location.

It's not fair in this case to blame the manufacturer on this one. Super Pro Street? Poor choice.... Also poor exhaust routing, you need to go all the way back.

Re: Exhaust

I didnt choose the muffler or routing, I told the muffler man to do spintechs and make it louder than my flows.

Re: Exhaust

My 68 c10 5.3 sanderson shorty tight tuck nova headers with factory gm stainless mufflers ( they are long and just fit). The mufflers were from suburban 88-91 5,7, 7.4 single exhaust. So i used two of them. As i figure it, if a big block can breathe through one muffler my 5.3 can breath good through 2 of these. Old man quiet at low, light throttle but does it sound nice when the trumpets sing when i get on it. Absolutely no drone, as i pull an old airstream (17' 2500lb) in overdive 3,08 rear gear, 1600 rpm at 60 mph in lockup. 14 mpg pulling, 22 mpg not pulling. To be honest i have heard nicer sounding exhaust, but i work at a power plant and everything is noisy and loud, so quiet time going camping, etc is rest time. I do like loud music through tube amplifiers, can't stand to listen to compressed mp3's unless for jogging, etc. Try tube amps through klipsch speakers with exponential mid and tweeter horns and you will never go back. (tube amps= second order harmonics, solid state= third order harmonics). All of the old school amps are srill in use with reissue equip. better than ever (dynakit.com)

Re: Exhaust

Dynomax Super Turbo, ran straight out the rear. Best mufflers I have ever used.

Very quiet at idle and low RPM, angry rasp at WOT. Consistently gets compliments

Re: Exhaust

I had a bad drone from my exhaust when I first installed it. Long tubes, Flowtech Raptor mufflers, exit at an angle in front of rear wheel. So I bought a set of resonators and put them in behind my mufflers. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/je...2s-5/overview/

Sounds perfect now. Just an option you may want to consider.
